F series Rear brake assembly pics ?
« on: September 27, 2008, 06:46:15 PM »
hey guys,
So  i think im going to try and do the conversion to a rear disk brake since im swapping over to the F frame. I have found a 16" rear wheel that i think i can use to do the conversion. Does anyone have an F series bike they could send me detailed pictures of so i can see what im getting into ? Thanks guys.

Besides the wheel, you need the swingarm as well, or you'll (probably) need to weld in a mount for the brake stay.

I did nearly the same thing on my bike-  the PO had a k rear on an F frame and I put everything back to stock.  I went the route of buying everything at once (wheel, arm, caliper/master, pedal) and just swapping it out.

What exactly do you want pictures of?

right now im just trying to judge whats going to be the best route. Im going to use the F frame. Im trying to figure if i should use the K wheel/swing arm/drum brake, and modify the frame to accept the pedal. Or if i should find and buy all the F frame stuff to do a rear disk conversion.

I am not trying to derail, but if a 750F swing arm will fit into a 750K frame, and a 750K frame swing arm will fit into a 550, why cant I throw a 750F rear swing arm in my 550? It would be a lot easier than machining and welding the 550 swingarm for a rear disk and I could keep it looking more period correct. (The drum brake is sufficient, but its not sufficiently cool...)

I have see people claim it but nothing really solid, if it is true I am suprised that no one has done it yet. I remember people saying that the 750's swing arm would fit on the 550 but that is was slightly shorter in lenght or something.

Well, I know for sure that you can put a 750k drum/swingarm on the 750f (at least on a 76).  I'm pretty sure that no frame modification is necessary, but a brake lever height adjustment stop would be nice.  If you just slap it on there it hits the footpeg for a stop (which worked fine, but not the best).

I can't tell you what i did, just what I undid.  I pulled off all the k stuff and put on the F rear end.  both brake pedals went in the same.  Have you studied the parts diagrams?  That'll give you a pretty good idea what's going on for each bike.  I think I still have the whole pedal/arm and aluminum mount sitting on my parts shelf.  I can send a picture for you to compare or send the whole thing your direction.  It's just cluttering up my already cluttered life.
