The youtube video looks like some kind of reenactment, though a good bit of the footage matches the BBC report - do your cops in the UK go out with camera crews?

Freaky.

It was taken from a 'fly on the wall' documentary program like 'Cops' in the USA Glenn, there was no re-enactment it was all as it happened, obviously the interviews were done later in a studio setting.

I wouldn't blame the policemen. Nobody would think that two good-looking women arrested for walking down the highway would try to escape a minor offence by committing suicide.

Alcohol and pills? That's when you are depressed. When you have been put to the test and decide it's time to go, what you want is everybody knowing about your death.

Suicide is more of a runaway from oneself than from the law. Suicide has not turning back. You can get away from the law, and even from jail, but not from death.

Seems to me like a very interesting case of study.

After the M6 incident, she was released from custody, she tried to commit suicide by throwing herself from a motorway bridge, she lived and broke both her ankles, she was in a wheelchair at her murder hearing."

Freaky.

Someone criticised the cops for being slow! You guys in the States must remember that under this government in the UK if a cop touches a person (such as these women), they are likely to be charged with assault. Thanks to the governing idiots the criminals rights are put before the rights of the victim.
Personally, I wish are cops could be more like the American police.

how inept were those officers? quite. Its like watching the keystone cops.

Here, they would have been immobilized, taken from the scene and then probably assaulted off camera.
No way - you got to put this in context - they were jumping the central reservation and running across six lanes of the busiest motorway in the UK - the cops did a superb job of making sure the impact was minimal. If they'd have jumped in front of me when I saw them and I had swerved there'd have been a huge pile up. Oh and the motorways over here tend to be 70mph speed limt but that's usually the slowest people go!

The cops did a great job of controlling both carriageways to get them stopped - they must have been on some serious drugs I reckon as their behaviour was so erratic and to knock down a copper after being hit by a car? OK so our coppers have to be careful about who they hit and how they restrain but they aren't a bunch of softies!

Have to say the clear up operation was done very well too to keep the traffic moving afterwards. When I gave my statement the copper said they were both alive but the first one was in a bad way. He said she was expected to recover though...

The British approach to policing may seem overly soft to some, but how many Americans think the way USA cops approach situations is overly confrontational, prone to escalate rather than diminish violence, glorifies arms over brains, is dehumanizing and brutish, highhanded, out-of-control of policy makers and honest folks, insensitive to family and other innocents (yes, even of criminals) ...just to list a few other viewpoints.

Has the US traded sensationalism for effectiveness?  Have the Brits traded civility for effectiveness?  Perhaps its not the policing technique per se, that should be our focus.  Maybe we should examine more closely the results of that technique on our culture, humanism and view of what kind of persons we are.

Most people would like to see a reduction of criminal and unsavory behaviour.  The sad part is that both policing extremes may do the opposite.

There's a danger of relying too much on media coverage for impressions of "approach to policing".

Most of the officers I've encountered here in the states don't act to escalate violence, glorify arms over brains, act dehumanizing or out-of-control, aren't insensitive, etc.

Beware of over-generalizing from too small a sample pool, and always consider the source of your data.

Most police officers, at least ones I've encountered here in The States are pompous A$$holes.  But I can understand why they are the way they are. 1)They are trained to be that way. 2) They are extremely jaded in that they see the human race in their worst possible element on a day to day basis.  If I were dealing with criminals day-in-day-out, I would probably be offensive/defensive as well.  That being said, it's really not fair to place blame on anyone but the person(s) who carried out such a sad but shocking attempt at suicide which risked the lives of many.

I'm not too keen on the militarization of the police in the US - remember when they used to be called 'Peace Officers'.  But, I do think there is a contributing factor - in what other civilized country do the police constantly need to be on guard against being shot and killed?

I'm in no way opposed to legal gun ownership.  This has become a much more violent society than it was when I was a kid and I have seen a, perhaps coincidental, change in the manner of policing.  I live in a rural area and my few encounters with Police have been mostly pleasant, so I'm not sure that my perceptions of change are real or based on the craziness that gets portrayed in the media and on youtube.   The Police I have encountered, though, do seem much more heavily armed than I remember them being years back.

Oh sorry I got lost in that Swedish newspaper, found an article on amateur porn making.......

Yeah I'm with Terry, those Swedes were hot.....if you like a knife in the guts occasionally to spice up your sex life. ;D

I work with 666 criminals daily and many of the Prison Officers who have come to work in NZ are ex Britain, some were Police Officers over there and they say it's totally unworkable and out of hand.
Mind you they see the same thing happening here in a few years if we let it, whole suburbs of one race, immigrants kicked out of their own country for us to deal with etc.
If I have a white guy (Caucasian,European)in my cells its a rarity yet Maori make up only 15% of the population?
My son's a cop, if he doesn't start his sentence every time he sees me with "got in a huge fight last night" I have to check its actually him!
Our PC brigade (the MP's and lawyers who hide behind high walls and electric alarms) have tried to stop our cops having Tasers?
They are allowed 9 mil Glocks but not tasers!!!
How dumb is that? The rational behind this fuzzy tree hugging thinking is that they will use deadly force less often than non lethal? I prefer the Aussie system, their cops are armed all the time and no one f*#ks with them, they don't have to adhere to the Treaty of Waitangi everytime they arrest someone with a decent sun tan, no wonder our second biggest NZ city is the Gold Coast!!!

so, what youre saying is, some meth head could come into your house and attack you, but if you defend yourself, you'll be charged? thats just craziness. here, in south carolina and something like 27 other states, if someone comes onto your property and threatens you, you can take whatever means you deem necessary to protect yourself. youre safe from civil suits as well. in other words the dead methheads family cant sue your ass when you kill their loved one protecting yourself from them.

Famous case here in NZ Fuzzy, 2 cops called to arrest a guy swinging a golf club in the main street of a sleepy little town, he had broken 200+ windows in that street (makes you think he was on something eh?) anyhow this innocent golfer is called out by the local cops to cease and desist.
He advances on them still swinging the golf club (probably a 9 iron, good selection for whacking cops) and they fire a warning shot, still he advances so the next few rounds go into him, he falls he dies.
Simple scenario, dickhead got what was coming to him, ah but no....his family sue the police....their innocent golfer son was mown down by an uncaring police force, probabaly because he was brown and loved golf!!!
No mention of his previous encounters with the law (or for that matter his families).
Now this family drags the cop who shot golfing son through the court, not once not twice but 3 times!!!
He is found innocent again and again and yet again.
Officer has to relocate, family kids the lot....now my arguement is if the cops had of had a taser that night he would still be alive!
He would no doubt still be a drain on the tax payer and the precious time of our Police force but he would have gone home the next day from the cells with nothing more than an interesting story and a bill for 200+ windows.

That's certainly a bit OTT even for the states!
Mind you we have kids that age killing (usually by knife) others here in sleepy ole NZ.
Being a Shotokan Black Belt I'd more likely kick their arses and wait for the cops to come pick em up, that way they have a start to their criminal career on file for future reference.
Similar case here in NZ, a guy sick of his fence being tagged when out to hassle some young guys but made the mistake of taking a steak knife with him, one of the kids got stabbed in the dark skirmish and now that guy faces at best manslaughter at worst murder.
You gotta wonder where these kids parents are eh, I believe my jail would be about 75% empty if parents actually did some parenting, most of the parents are just as bad and blame society, the courts, the cops or me for their kids being in jail.

Don't worry mate, we're working on an invasion, er, I mean liberation plan for New Zealand as I type this, we've been supporting "Un Zud" financially and militarily for so long now, that we've decided to just "bite the bullet" and make middle earth our newest state.

I've got the Mack and the tow chain hooked up, ready to pull down all the statues of that bloke Helen Clark! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Same as in England - some poor Farmer was being robbed here a few years back by two gypsy youths. One of them had something like 119 PREVIOUS convictions! He shot them with his farm shotgun and the poor beggar is still in Jail.

While I might not agree with legalising guns like in the USA I do thoroughly agree with the USA's largely consistent policy of being able to protect your property and your family by whatever means necessary....
