What RPM should I bet at 50 mph?
« on: September 17, 2005, 03:47:11 PM »
I actually got the 73 CB500 out on the highway today and it was running at 4000rpm at 50 mph. That can't possibly how fast it should be running at that speed. What is the stock tooth count on the sprockets for that bike. I remember reading somewhere that its something like 17 and 34. I also have a 100/90/19 on the front and a 120/80/18 on the back. Thanks

On the `72 CB500 I run the same size front tire and a 120/90/18 on the rear, and that sounds about right.
4000 rpm on these motors is nothing because thats not even halfway to redline, they don`t start making real power until after 6000 rpm.
That`s what makes these bikes such a blast to ride ;D
17 front and 34 tooth rear are stock.
You can run an 18 tooth up front but don`t let the chain get too loose because it`ll shear off the clutch actuater rod.
Ask me how I know ::)

Running in 5th I get 4k at 50, 5k at 60, 6k at 70... That's how I know I'm in my top gear ;D

Course, I don't like to run it over 70.  The engine sounds good, but having hunks of metal thrown around faster than the eye can see in controlled explosions, a tank full of highly flammable liquid, and a very lightly armored set of jewels sitting very closeby make it a little disconcerting...  That, and I don't like to get beat to death by all the backwash created by vehicles around me :)
