gas cap thumb latch broke. Now what??????
« on: September 24, 2008, 02:15:23 PM »
After paying a lot of money for a thumb latch for my resto project it broke on me. Snapped right in half. I know and understand that this part is unavilable everywhere. And the local junk yard told me "good luck finding that one". Im shure im not the only one thats had this problum. What have you all done? What sugestions are out there to get a cap on a OEM tank. And BTW its a tank from a 74 750 K model.

My latch broke too.  I happened to get another tank with a good latch.  A little drilling with a small bit removed the pin and gave me a good latch.  Now the hard part, finding a suitable replacement pin.  I looked in the bolt section of Lowes and found a sort of pin.  I don't know the exact name of it at the moment.  It is a hollow cylinder with a lengthways slit which allows it to be somewhat compressed.  I found one that was the same diameter of the stock pin and just a hair longer.  I haven't had time to run out to the garage and try it yet since I just moved into a new house and am busy as heck unpacking.  If I remember, I'll post back to let you know how it goes.

Geez, don't drill those pins out guys.  They are a hard item to find.  When I had my cap rechromed on my KO this winter I used a very thin punch.  I carefully punched the old pin out which just wrapped the bent hollow end up.  When I got the items back I put the pin back in and used a BB on the end of a C-clamp to crimp the end back again.

That's what's called a "spring pin".

Not stock looking at all but what I used was I bought some stainless M3 socket cap screws from bolt depot. Measured the cap and spring latch pin and ordered them a little oversize. Cut them down to what they needed to be and topped the off with some stainless acorn nuts...Looks great!

I make replacement stainless steel (non-sparking type) screw kits with satin-finished parts, look nice. $4.40 for one set, $6.80 for two in the same shipment (add $2.40 for each additional set in the shipment). Most of the proceeds return to SOHC4.net . Drop me a PM if you guys need some.

The replacement lock was a safety recall for ALL Honda's with the clip type latch, not just the 400 Fours.

It is always a good idea to depress the latch when closing the cap, instead of snapping it closed.

I advice you to look around for a few weeks. That tread you saw before was one I started a few weeks ago.
I need the latch also, and everyone told me it was impossible to find. I found it in a regular honda bikeshop, bought two latches (one for my friend who was looking for one too) and 12 cylinderhead bolds, the bill as around 35 Euro. That were the last ones they had, or I would have bought all of them.

I'm sure someone on a scrapyard or some old shop must have some, just be patient.

Bryan...what is the "cap pin" number from Honda?  My book just lists the entire assembly and not the individual pin?
