O boy that was fun
« on: September 26, 2008, 05:42:46 pm »
So I just got my first CB550 the other day.  Have big plans and making her into a cafe racer.  So any ways I'm starting to strip the bike down.  Got most of the stuff off until I got to the dang oil filter.  The bolt head was all ready rounded.  I throw ever trick I new at it to get it off.  Pip wrench, grind ed it squaw, those back out drill bits (which broke)  >:( cutting a flat head spot in it, plus a few other things.  What finally did the trick was to grind it flat then make a cross and use a cold chisel with a hammer.

That was a fun hour!  Now I'm trying to get the crank case cover off and the Phillips screws are stuck, O the joys of a 34 year old motor  ;)  Any one know any tricks before I end up striping the heads?

I'll second the impact driver - ranks up there as the best 20bucks I've ever spent.

Not sure about the 550, but for the 750 you can buy a new oil filter bolt that is 18mm, which is nice.  Much less likely to round off.

found it http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/part_28972/

this site is nice if you dont mind paying extra for the pounds instead of dollars and shipping cost. they actually have airbox rubbers which are apparently hard to find.

Yep , that brings back memories of misery in the garage , all ready to ride and cant get the dang filter bolt off. I stumbled on this part , bought it and have been very pleased. A nice quality part at a reasonable price. Randak is reachable and responded to my concerns about reliability. Ive had it on my K8 for 5 oil changes now and no probs at all , also any spin on that fits a 95 Tacoma works well . Now Im using K&N for oil and air !

Found this bike in completely stock condition in Feb. 08. Paid over twice what my new one cost 30 years ago. Am trying to re-create the look of the late 70's Drag Bike styling.More later. 4-2-10 It ain't stock any more and I have no idea what I am trying to create !

Yeah, I guess it's 17mm not 18mm, but by taking a peep on ebay, looks like it's the same bolt shared by both models.  Made by Emgo.  Readily avilable pretty much everywhere that sells accessories for our bikes.

For the phillips screws on the side cases, never use a #2 phillips - I think most of us have wrecked plenty of screw heads that way.  Always use at least a #3 phillips... or better is a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) #3 bit (but much harder to find).  Impact drivers are ok and I've used them with success but I've found #3 bits to be best.

An important tip for changing oil filters: replace (at least) the big O-ring every couple of years, and always just snug down the bolt - don't tighten it. With a good O-ring, it won't leak, and it will come off easily with a 6-point socket and a quick smack of the ratchet handle, next time around.

In 130,000+ miles, I'm only on my 2nd one. I installed this one at around 4000 miles, when I learned the 'right' way, and it's been removed every 1000 miles for oil changes since!
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

I've had my impact driver ever since I stole it off my big brother! ;D
Best thing I ever inherited from him ha ha (sorry Jeff but that was 30 years ago).
If the oil filter boly wont budge and you have already destroyed most of the head, drill into it with a small drill and insert a self tapper screw, this gives the stilson (vice grips or pipe wrench to you USA guys) something to bite on. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

For the sidecover screws, since I dont have an impact driver, I've had luck with using a socket and a philips head. Lightly tap the rachet with a hammer, then crank the screw. You get a decent amount of leverage doing it this way.

I think I'm going the Terry path - I don't recall the price but I think it's around 60 US.  I'm trying to decide how many.... combined shipping will matter (from down under) and he offers discounts on multiple units.
