stupid question but....are you using a penetrating oil with your efforts or is it just grab tools and go? If not may I recommend you attack those screws with PB blaster or liquid wrench the night before you try to attack them with a screwdriver.

Yep a impact driver has saved most of my hair  but really every toolbox should have one i think god himself invented it.

this site is nice if you dont mind paying extra for the pounds instead of dollars and shipping cost. they actually have airbox rubbers which are apparently hard to find.

Well, I paid $7 for an oil filter bolt for my 550, from z1enterprises. Pretty good price if ya ask me!

For the phillips screws on the side cases, never use a #2 phillips - I think most of us have wrecked plenty of screw heads that way.  Always use at least a #3 phillips... or better is a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) #3 bit (but much harder to find).  Impact drivers are ok and I've used them with success but I've found #3 bits to be best.

This is my new fav tool I have.  Happens to be one of the cheapest to!  Also yes I am using some penetrating oil.  Im hitting the cyclinder studs right with it for the past week, and about to take the tourch to it as well.  Lets see if I make a 2nd post about that tomorrow    O I so hope not though

I just ordered a set of JIS screwdrivers from McMaster-Carr.  25 bucks or so for #0-4.  When they get to me I'll tell you what I think of them.

In the shop days, I found the best way to smooth out and break in these impact drivers was to drop them into the oil bucket under the bike, where you just drained the oil, so you could change someone's clutch....

First thing I bought when I got the bike:

Metric socket set

Then I stripped a screw, pulled some hair, said some bad words... Was back at the hardware store within 20 minutes to get:

Impact driver.

I think it's a necessary item for a bike that's 30+ years old.
