And then there were 2.
« on: September 27, 2008, 07:34:27 PM »
Well now - while in the dealership today - ordering a new spring for my old girl's shifter drum indexer lever, I did the foolish and sat down on the only other bike there that "fits me" - a 2007 919 in red.  Yes - 2007, brand spankin' new (indicating zero, as in 0, miles).  Only one they had.

I said how much.
He said - make me an offer.
I said - hmmm $6K (really was all I can afford).
He said - list on that is nearly $9K
I said - ah well -I can't afford that - I'm just here to buy a part for my 400 anyway.
He said - go buy your part, I'll talk to the boss.

I went to the parts counter, ordered my $2.49 spring - he walked up and said $6100 - brand new - we'll waive the freight and setup - so it is $6100 + tax.

I said - gotta talk to the wife.

He said - I'm here till 5:30 but the price is only good today cause we are closed Monday and Tuesday is too late to get it on the books for this month - and it is only worth it if it is on our books this month.

---------------
Hmmmm.
Went home.
Thought.
Check the bank account.
Checked insurance.
Read reviews.
Posted here.
Wife came home.

Said - Dear - see this motorcycle on my computer screen.  What if I buy one - great deal.

My wife knows me pretty well.  She said -

"Ya know - I was thinking yesterday - you are spending an awful lot of time out there working on that bike keeping it running - I was thinking maybe you needed something newer.  You are riding a lot again and it is a shame for you to have to fix it alot and I know you get frustrated when it isn't running right.  I think you should buy it."

-------
Picked my jaw up off the floor and picked up the phone.
-------

The amazing thing is she has never ridden with me - and has no desire to.  But the bike was what brought us together because I rode into the Village Inn in town every Sunday for breakfast, and she was a waitress there.  They called me Motorcycle Bob.  If I hadn't ridden every Sunday - we probably would not have met/got married oh those 24 years ago (this monday).

--------
I'll upload a picture of the two girls together when I get the 400 back together...

--------
Meantime - ridin' a new one - not a big drift from the 400.  Still a in-line 4-Honda - just not an SOHC.

It does ride a bit different.  Not as nimble - though it is nice.  Have to hold it in the corners a lot more - and I'm NOT pushing it at all.  Ridden >100K mile but it has been quite a while since a bike this fast - and the stats are that new crashes are on new bikes, no matter what experience you have.

-------
Whooeee

There's an idea.  And it may happen - the way she was lookin' at it when I got home was 'different'....

Congratulations Bob, MY wife would like for me to get away from the old bikes and actually, completely away from bikes period.  ::) SO I feel I am safe in saying that mine would never be agreeing to get a newer one, much less a new one! ::) Oh well, that's the way it goes. Give that new bike a ride for me, will ya?  ;D

                                    Take care, Bill ;)

I just drove for a full day in my Father-in-law's pick up to the nearest Ducati dealer to pick up my Monster from it's 30,000 mile service. After leaving them almost $650 for the service, and then figure almost $100 more in gas, My wife said to me last night, "Well, after we get the car paid off next summer, maybe we can look for a new bike for you."

Aren't Bob's wives great?   ;D

Good luck with that 919. I've always liked that bike.  :)

It is a fun bike.  Doesn't have the "character" of the 400, but starts easier...

I'll get that 400 running (well shifting) again soon.

beautiful...

that's my favorite color on that bike... the flat black holds a close second but i do like the deeper colors of those bikes.

scenery's nice too.  ;)

I kind of fell in love with it when I saw it in the showroom.  I've always kinda liked red bikes.

Layfeyette huh - not too far away.  Do you recognize it?

Man, those Mickey Mouse ear mirrors stick out like a sore thumb don't they?  I love the 919 though.

Congrats! I was also able to buy a 2007, the first new bike I've ever had after more than 35 years of riding. Hard to watch the odometer change from zero to the first mile for me, after that it was easy!!
Hope it takes you out to a great many diners and elsewhere,
Ben

Assuming its injected, you won't miss carburetors or any of the maintenance required on the other bikes. I've found myself riding my CBR 600 more since I got it than either of my CBs too. You'll get an appreciation for newer bikes the more miles ou put on I'd bet. Since I haven't been on the CBs as much, seems like they've become another enjoyable separate hobby. The trick now is to convince the wife that the old bikes are still worthy eh? Enjoy sir, nice bike.

Yeah - not real fond of the mirrors.  As soon as I figure out how to get the bar end weights out- I'll put a set of bar end mirrors on it.

Really enjoying the injection - specially on these cold days here.  Still tuning the suspension a bit - just over 1000miles now.

G'Day Bob, well done on the bike, enjoy. Now tell us more about your two wives!  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
