Valve train problems
« on: September 25, 2008, 07:07:22 PM »
Hi,

After eliminating all other problems I found that my 72 CL 350 Twin has a low compression problem. It seems to leak air out of the left spark plug hole.

A compression test told me the problem is probably in the top end.

I took it apart and noticed no probs with the head gasket, but I did see very unusual wear on the rocker arm lobes and cam shaft at the problem cylinder. There was also a gunge with
metal shavings covering the cam where it turns in the side cover housing.

What do I do about this one? I don't know what would cause that kind of grinding. The rockers are visibly more worn on the trouble cylinder than the ok one(it has a nice shiny finish there). What do I test? Would a bad valve cause that, or am I looking at replacing the cam. Of course, I want to find out what is warping the camshaft that way.

Thanks,

Richard

Centrifugal oil filter blocked, replace cam, cam bearings, rocker arms and gaskets/seals plus thorough internal cleanout

Thanks, guys.

I agree with your idea. I'll check the passages at the top end.

My cam doesn't have bearings, just the side covers it turns in.

Any ideas where I can get a cam and a pair of rocker arms?

Richard

The end covers ARE the bearings and will need replacing with the cam
