smoke and water coming from my crankcase breather
« on: September 28, 2008, 02:23:26 PM »
After my bike gets really warmed up (like coming to a stop to pay a bridge toll after freeway speeds)  It doesn't like to idle, has a very low oil pressure if I don't blip the throttle and puffs of white smoke are coming from my crankcase breather.  At 70mph plus, I noticed water droplets coming from the uni breather which is routed uphill from the breather port and sits nicely at the right front side of my gas tank.  Is there a way to check for excess crankcase pressure? Can you take the tappet covers off one at a time to check the flow of oil to the head?  I'll check for overfilled oil and post again with more details.

thanks,

I'm not sure about the idling part, but I'd say that this behavior is pretty normal, and perhaps this problem has to do more with carburetion.  The wrong mixture can mess with your idle as the motor heats up and also overheat the motor, which would explain the lack of oil pressure (hot oil gets a lot thinner) and the crankcase smoke.  That white "smoke" is only steam.  If you park your bike outside, a lot of condensation builds up in there and it takes a surprisingly long time for it to vent out of there.  As far as excess crankcase pressure is concerned, I don't think that's ever really a problem because it's not sealed off from the outside (the breather equalizes pressure with the outside).
