Dynatek on my cb400f— I'm an electrical moron
« on: September 28, 2008, 03:10:27 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I just got my dynatek ignition to put on my cb400f

I'm running 3 ohm dynatek coils.

I want to install this myself, but I'm a little thick when it come to electrics so bear with me.

I removed the blue and yellow wires come from the existing points plate, removed the 10mm nut holding the unit in place as well. SO now I'm just looking at the points cam assembly I believe. In my directions its says something about a 1/4 inch magnet on the rotor? Is this on the dynatek unit?

This is a far as I have gotten.

Any help of pictures are extremely helpful

Thanks!

Hi thanks for the quick reply. I do have the instructions that came with the dynatek, I guess I'm just not sure to what they are referring to at times. Here are some pictures of where I'm at I'm still confused about the 1/4 magnet and the spreading of the weights? Are these on the advanced assembly of the dynatek?

thanks

SO the advanced assembly is in the proper location with the 1,4 marks pointing up. I have secured in with the 10mm bolt. I should not have to do anything else to the advanced assembly correct?

Thanks so much for your help I really appreciate it

yes, if i remember correctly its a twist AND set sort of thing... not spelled out very well in the instructions.

i'd have to break into the bike and/or instructions to be sure of what i'm talking about though.   ;D ;D ;D

Once you have bolted the unit in place, you need to run the wires out of the crankcase in the same place that the stock wiring comes out.  This will allow you to put the crankcase cover back in place when you are done.

The Dyna S uses three wires.  The red one goes to an ignition switched hot wire.  The black and white ones go to the coils.

As you look at the unit when it's bolted in place, the trigger (rectangular black plastic box) on the left is for the Cyl 1 and 4 coil.  The right hand trigger is for Cyl 2 and 3 coil.  Look at your spark plug wires and figure out which coil goes to the No. 1 and 4 spark plugs.  This is the Cyl 1-4 coil.  See if it has the yellow wire or the blue one.  Can't remember myself.  Then look at the wire coming off the Cyl 1-4 trigger.  It'll be white or black.  that needs to hook to the yellow or blue wire to match things up.  The remaining wire obviously goes to the other coil.

There are three screws that hold the unit in place on the end of the crank.  Loosen these up slightly to allow the plate to rotate.  take the no. 4 spark plug wire off the plug and put another spark plug into the end of the wire.  Rest the plug against the block to ground it out.  Turn on the key and SLOWLY turn the large nut on the end of the crank in a clockwise direction.  You will be able to hear the spark plug actually spark.  Check thru the sight hole on the Dyna backing plate and see if the 1-4 F mark is in line with the index mark.  If not, then you need to rotate the plate slightly clockwise or counter clockwise and check spark again.  Eventually you will get it to the point where it fires the plug on exactly the 1-4 F mark.  Tighten up the three plate screws.  Then pull the wire off the no. 3 plug and repeat the above procedure.  However, instead of rotating the whole plate, take the little tiny allen wrench that comes with the Dyna S and loosen the screws that hold the 2-3 ignition trigger to the plate.  This will allow the timing for the 2-3 coil to be set seperately from that of the 1-4 coil.

That'll get your timing spot on.  You can check it with a timing light when the engine is running to make sure that the advancer unit is working.

Thanks triffecpa for thee thorough write up. I'm setting up the red wire to the ignition and was wondering do I connect the red wire to the black/white wire before it splits into the two wires? Or do I connect it before the wires split off to go to their respective coils?

Thanks

Splice the red wire to the black and white wire before the split. I just did one of these so I can also tell you how to time it when you get to that point. Hope this helps

Hello, I'm still having trouble with my dynatek. spliced the red wire supplied with the dynatek to my black/white wire for the ignition. I spliced the red wire above where the black/white wire splits into 2 to go to each coil.  I also installed a new right hand control switch I got new from david silver spares. Now the starter motor will turn over but i'm getting no spark.

Any suggestions

only idea i have right now is check your grounds and connections.

positive you're not getting spark?... took the plug out, held it to the metal engine, attached to the plug cap and cranked the motor?  no spark?  they are small so look closely.

hold the plug to the engine... frame is not good due to paint/powdercoat not making good contact.
