Topic: Should a K3 need needles raised to full height (rich)??

My K3 has symptoms of running lean in the mid range so I opened the carbs to check the needles. I found the needle clips on the 2nd from the bottom slot - i.e. one slot above max fuel flow.

Seems odd to me that a mostly stock K3 should need the needles raised up to max height.

Should I just put the clip on the bottom slot & not worry about it or should I look for something else?

CB750 K3
Stock air box, new Emgo filter.
Carb boots good and tight
4 into 2 pipes (like Mac)
5 ohm Dyno coils
Just had a full tune up, strobe timed, points dressed, valves checked...

White plugs, bluing pipes, popping, engine searches while at mid RPMs /  constant throttle, surges when RPMs hit about 5500 and 3/4 throttle...

You may want to check your jet sizes.  And a good cleaning of your carbs may be in order. Also check for vacum leaks.

jets were OK, cleaned them anyway, needles looked OK.
only real problem was one float was way out of adjustment.

I was "hoping" to find crud in the needle jets - that way at least I'd know what the problem was.

I will argue that anyone running original 35 year old carb to engine rubber manifolds has some problem. Changing mine was the best thing I have done in 10 years. I thought mine were fine. The change is so small each year as to hardly notice. No, You should not have to raise your needles all the way. Dan

I also recommend the carb manifold clamps that carpy sells. They are good quality and get much tighter than stock. Dan

manifolds seem to seal fine, no change in RPMs when cleaner is sprayed around edges - they're not original - not sure how old, tho...
