Do folks feel like they have to educate you on your CB750?
« on: September 29, 2008, 03:35:55 PM »
This seems to be happening to me a lot lately. How many of us with CB750's (us "young" members who weren't born when our bikes were made) have had older people see us on one of these classics and feel they need to educate us on the historical significance of them? (And being erroneous about a lot of the "history" lesson) I want to say, "Look, pal.. I know. That's why I ride one!!"

Don't get me wrong- I love swapping stories and repair tips, but it's the attitude of "You're too young, so you obviously don't know" that bugs me.

Minor rant over. Has this happened to anyone else?

Luckily somehow no. A lot of "I used to have one!" which always tend to be good conversations, and it has even led me to a few parts!

I got approached once in a post office and told that I "had a very special bike".

The older gentlemen told me that I had what they call a "sandcast bike" and that it was worth a lot. (I do wish...)

I was riding my 76 750 at the time. I told him the very earlier 69's where sandcast but I am pretty sure he thought he was still right.
   This pretty much sums it up.   76' CB592 cafe. 69 750 project, 03 CBR954, 75 750 super sport.

Not a 750....I know this is about the big four jonesy but it happens on the small ones too  ;)

A lot of "I used to have one!" ....

I get that most of the time, people sometimes say "oh, I used to have one just like it....but mine was a 81' 400" ...or something to that effect  ::).

I enjoy when people aproach me about the little bike, but so far, have never been schooled on the model by someone.

I did have a person this summer ask me about the bike and I said I restored it last winter...he said did you paint it, and I said NO, my talented brother did.

..Then he said,......well. so you didn't restore it yourself than did you? ...and walked away.  As if to say that unless I was the only one who worked on the bike than I was not worthy of saying that I restored it myself.

...I now say I restored most of it  ;D

theres an older, retired attorney here in forest acres that i run into alot at local gatherings and once in a while at the corner shell when i get my gas. he rides a bmw touring monster now but he told me of the times in the 70's when he rode a 1080cc sohc4 chopper. wishes he still had it. we have had some great bench racing sessions talking about the technical side of the old hondas. he talks more like a retired shop owner than a retired lawyer. alot of folks tell me about the ones they got new back in the 70's too.

Got approached this past Saturday by a guy who knew the year of my bike ('76) even though it's painted black, but then proceeded to tell me that I was driving a "750 four."  I misunderstood him and answered that I am driving a 750k.  He looked at me puzzled and then said, that he had a CB 750 four just like mine but it wasn't a "k."  Guess I shoulda just kept my mouth shut and let him ramble, but like a dumbass I corrected him.  We had a brief conversation about the bike and I'm certain that he thinks I was stupid for not knowing what I had.   ::)

Never had it happen but then the k7/8 are not as common in my area. I suppose in a more motorcycle populated area, it would be different.

I almost had to get into an argument with a fellow at the VJEMC show over my bike. He kept insisting that the first year of the 400f was 74. He refused to believe that the 350 went from 72-74 and that the 400 was a 75 model.

I have had two of these 750k's before - 1 was 15 years ago and the other was 20 years ago (similar mods(both stolen)).  So, should I be talking to myself and educated myself at the same time?  Even had a CB500 with similar modes about 22 years ago (Roommate stole that and a months rent money).  What is messed up is that I only remember the year of flippin one of them (750K3, well both of them might of been, LMAO).

Yes, I am an old fart, been on two wheels now for 30 years and on way too many bikes.  Ohhh, I got one, Doh, my very first street bike, when i was 14 was a 75 400-4.  I blew a hole in a piston the size of dime.  Dad threw the manual at me and said fix it.  So I did and it was my first engine work and I'll be darn if ran better than before the hole.

Here I go at myself at at y'all too.  HAHAHA
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I love it when people stop me at the gas station or where ever and want to talk bikes.

I REALLY love it when they walk past a row of 30K chrome monsters to look at my lil' ol' 550.  :)

Two months ago I had a guy yell out his window at me while stopped at a light.  He wanted to know "how big" my the bike was.  I told him 750.  He said, "I remember when that used to be big!"  He then proceeded to ask where I purchased it.  He thought it was a new bike and wanted to go look at them.  Should have seen his face when I told him it was a '71.  He was an older guy, so I figured he would have remembered them.

I get a lot of people talking to me in stopped (or slowly moving) traffic about it, but haven't had anyone try to "educate" me on it.  Lots of gas station stories too about how they owned one when they were younger.  It is an antique after all.  You just don't see people riding these bikes any more.

I've had a couple people try to edjumacate me on my K6 and F3.  I try to nicely correct their misinformation -- one guy was talking about his 750A that he wanted to sell me for $2,500 because it was really rare and had an upgraded Mac exhaust system  ::)  I told him that the K6 I was riding cost me $200.  He looked at me, turned and walked away.

I can barely make it 10 blocks on Wifey's CB200 (photos here - http://home.comcast.net/~tbpmusic/id55.htm )without getting pulled over by a cop - then the, "Wow, my dad/uncle/grandpa (relative of choice) had one of those......".
If they only knew I never bothered to get a motorcycle license..........

If I park it to go in the store, there's invariably a crowd around it when I come back out, and it takes 20 minutes to get away.

Crotch rockets and Harley Wannabes can drive by all day and never get a second glance, but that little bike is a traffic-stopper.

These bikes are very attractive to those who appreciate motorcycles.  Some "bikers" let their egos get in the way of noticing our Hondas, but deep down inside, they know just how cool a CB750 K series is compared to their high dollar potato.

I can't begin to count the number of people who have in one way or another admired my bike.

I often do the same with older BMW's, Kawa's, and Yama's and the rare Guzzi and Duc.

That is what happens when you choose to ride a bike as iconic as a Honda CB750. These bikes were the Holy Grail for many motorcyclists as soon as they were introduced!

It's funny, different bikes get different attention. I can't ride my Ducati anywhere without getting followed by the police, but on any of the older bikes I can go over the limit and not be bothered...

When I go riding with friends my Norton or my BMW always get more stares and questions than their Harley's or GSXR's. The bike I couldn't go anywhere on without getting asked a million questions was my Derbi GPR50R though lol. "What size bike is that, 250?" "50cc?!!! what?!" "Sounds like a weedwacker on steroids!" "That's not the gas tank it's a storage bin?!"

I've had bad encounters with the Norton though. Some jerk on a Harley told me to "get a real bike, not some british crap" I pointed at the oil his valve cover was leaking, and said "well my ancient british bike doesn't leak a drop of oil....so that must say something"

Yanno, come to think of it, I get a bunch of looks with my 800 pounder.  People have no idea what it is and can't believe it is an '85.  They think it is much younger.  Then I get, is that the A/C or the Heater, that thing is so big.  I'll say, have you ever heard of a V-Max, I get a yea then, then I say now you have seen one dressed.

I'm with Gerhed.  I get a comment -maybe- once every 2 or 3 months.  It's only happened twice that someone actually knew about the model.  But then, that's ok 'cause I'm an introvert and too much attention would just freak me out...

It is happening more this year than most. People are trying to guess the year and they are admiring it. A few weeks a go some real hard core bikers pulled around where I was parked. I try to look unconcerned at these times. The meanest looking one walked up to me and looked my K8 over. He called the rest over and I expected an ass kicking or serious public ridicule. He told the rest, this is the bike I learned to ride on, great f--king bike. We talked about it for bit and they invited me to ride with them until my exit. Here I am a old pudgy guy riding a rice burner with semi outlaws. At the gas station people just looked puzzled. Maybe they though I was so "bad" I could ride with them. No, they probably thought I was their one of their fathers.  :(
