Hello!  been lurking for a while... reading up on my bikes... I've decided that my '71 cb500 is the first victim for teardown, clean, paint and rebuild...I've decided to try rebuilding my carbs.

Thank you to everyone who have posted pictures with their progress... I cannot tell you how invaluable it is to new guys.  I can't see to find how to post pics in this topic... but as soon as I do...I send along my progress pics.

 I've torn down the bike, removed the carbs and engine... and now have torn down the carbs. 

good advise from the board about seperating carbs into their own containers.... very helpful.
did a good soaking in Simple Green...  GREAT STUFF!

I followed the thread from Hope regarding " rebuild your carb...It's not that hard unless your stupid".  I felt comfortable that I'm not stupid... but still needed to review pics in the article vs the repair manual.  ( I don't have Mikuni carbs.... I have  Keihin ) but none the less... progress slow and steady...everything went into it's seperate bins.. and now is clean...I've misplaced my carb kits so Ii'' be running down to Honda to order more.  I've sprayed everything down with WD40 and wipped clean.

One item:  I ran into a snag as I removed the jet needle...  I can't get the two screws to release.  Is it a big deal if I just soak the whole assembly ( i've removed the throttle valve but left the jet needle attached).... this would be totally easier if I could insert F'n pics....

You could soak but a lot of the guys here swear by PB Blaster to remove stubborn screws and bolts.  Try giving the offender a few light taps with a hammer to try and break it free.  Notice I said light taps.

I basically just pulled it out as a whole unit and soaked it...  I'll give the PB blaster a try... if I am unsuccessful... what kind of crud can build up behind the screws and the base?

This stuff does wonders cleaning carbs - it's pretty crazy stuff and removes gunk really fast. (and nail polish, when you just did your nails the night before. . . grrrrr)

B12 Chemtool has some extra (icky cancer causing, I'm sure) chemicals that other carb cleaners don't, so it really cleans stuff well. You can also get it in non-spray cans. It might help get the last bit of grime off where other cleaners have failed - I have had that happen several times now.

finally resting on a cafe-ish bike




now a complete tear down.... hopefully turning it into something like....

I liked the chopper after the forks were lowered. I'd also like to see more pic of the cafe version.
