Baffle removal, '77 550k (solved)
« on: November 01, 2008, 08:17:09 AM »
Hey guys,

My exhausts are in pretty rough shape, the baffles are rattling around. I want to remove and replace them with something else, but I'm having difficulties. I've removed the end of one pipe and attempted cutting through the first chunk of steel with my dremel and reinforced cutting wheels... Screw that! I chewed through two of those freaking things and they're $1 a pop. I didn't even get the first part of the baffle out!

Looking at the outside of the pipes there are some dimples, they look like spot welds. Would these be the only points the baffle is welded to or is that a stupid assumption? I was thinking I could drill at the dimples and braze the holes up when I'm done...

Any suggestions for getting them out? I like the look of the tapered original exhaust but I hate the sound of baffles going TING. Makes my engine sound like it's blowing apart. Plus I don't want to blast chunks of metal at cars behind me, I had a few bits blast through the end of one pipe when I first had the bike running.

Solution: a long chisel and a hammer

Cool, I get to keep the look of the stock 4-4 and make my own sound!
