CB750K2 or less: Fork Tube Dust Covers source?
« on: September 30, 2008, 11:15:09 AM »
Hello All: In converting a K2 or less from the gators to dust covers like the later models, does anyone know what to use? If memory serves, those off of a contemporary XL-250 would fit and I have ordered such from Bike Bandit on speculation. But then I thought I should've asked, someone here knows I'm sure. I used to, but memory fails me.

PS: I've done a forum search to no avail.

Are the inner fork tubes a different diameter on the early bikes? I thought they were all the same k1-8.

The inner tube diameter is the same on all. But the top of the lower leg is different, and I'm not sure where the differences are per model changes.. nor am I sure what i have anymore.  :(  :-[

I know its not later than a K2, as that is what the bike is and I would have gone earlier not later with replacement parts. I think I'm running a K-1 lower leg.

Looking for input there as well.

PS: I remember way back when, we used covers off of an OSSA.  :)  ( Oh Sh-t Stopped Again)

I'm taking a look today and I measured the top of my K1 lower legs and they are smaller diameter than the top of my 76F. I think somewhere in the K1,2,3 model that diameter increased to that of the 76F.

THe 72 XL250 dust covers I ordered fit both the tube and the leg. However, they leave a part of the groove in the lower leg visible, sort of like a pretty girl with her slip showing. Not good.

Any clues?

"them"? Details please. The ones that fit K2+ and F bikes don't fit <K2 like mine. The top of the lower leg is smaller diameter.   Link, part number, model reference, etc.

Be warned 72 and earlier are not chromed past the seal used surface, you will have to plate part of your tuibes or use aftermarket.

Better trhough if you paid the bux to get originals hardchromed

Good if someone can work out what model dust covers to use. My K0 forks are 35mm sliders like everyone else's but the fork top of the lower leg is wider than the K4 forks on my Bomber. The dust covers off that will push fit on but are clearly not quite big enough so look a bit naff.

If you work out what to get and where in terms of the model I'd sure appreciate knowing!  ;D

I have fresh tubes from Frank's MAintennance chromed all the way up, no prob. Dust covers are prob.

As mentioned the Honda XL250 covers fit the ID and OD exactly of the K0/K1 fork tube and leg. But the internal lip that hooks into the groove on the top of the lower leg is not as wide as the groove, so they leave a little of the groove showing. I will have pictures tonight.

here's a pic of my tubes from Forking by Frank's. They are 2" over in length. I figured since I'm droipping to a 17" front wheel, I might like to restore some ride height. They will also carry a little more air as I'm using period air caps. Chromed all the way up.

But back on topic, the Honda XL250 dirt bike dust covers fit perfectly
except for this gap.

The dust cap will move up and down in that groove, but it won't come out. Remembering that the diameter of the K0/K1 leg is less than that of K2? or certainly K3 and above, where the F models would fit perfectly.

Brainstorming, I figure if no one comes up with a better match, I'll wrap the top of the groove with a braid of safety wire or something thicker like copper wire. Then when the rubber dust cover pops over it, the cover should stay at the bottom of the groove, hence no groove showing.

I think I used Superglide(late 70,s, early eighties) , plus the cool chome covers from Drag Specialtes, back when I was still a Drag dealer.

Superglide seals fit as well, I think 78-82ish.. (easier to find on the road sometimes)

Thanks, that's come up a couple of times. The first CB500T was 1974, so my guess is it would align with the later larger K size lower legs, not the smaller K0/K1 legs. Bike Bandit wants nearly $20 each, so too much for me to experiment.

Interesting! My memory was that the perfect fit came from a non-Honda model. Maybe that's it, I'll research.

The chrome covers look really good on chrome forks as they cover the black boot.

I think both forks on both bikes are made by Showa, the seals and boots are Showa, not Kayaba (at times they list those names in description)

Yes I thought Harley was sourcing those forks from Japan. What is the Superglides model designation? XLCR?

Should be FX & XL 76-84 supperglides, Lowriders Sportster.. dual disc model 35mm.

I pulled up the boot # online

DS 240350...5.95 pr

seals, 90% sure these work, but dont sue me..

DS 174540....7.95, (not sure if it is a pair)

Be best if you went to a shop that had the seals in stock and could compare.

Cant find the chrome covers for them online (the 39,s probably wont work), but would think they still have them.. I run a more rounded thin stainless cover on mine, they were called Frisco caps..

Slip an o-ring in the groove that's showing on your dust covers.  Cheap and unless you point it out, no one will be the wiser.

I had been thinking of a wire wrap, but the O Ring idea sounds real good. Thanks!  And you may not have been thinking this, but the cover will pop over the Oring and occupy the bottom of the groove. The O ring shouldn't show at all.

I'll take my leg to ACE and look for O Rings.

That's the part number I come up with too! I may order them just to document whether they work for the collective data base.

THe O Ring idea below along with the Harley part, one or the other will work.

I may look for the chrome covers as well. Chrome bits is in my "1970s" look theme.  :)

Yes I may give it a try. THey are on Bike Bandit as well for about that price. I got the XL250 pair from Bike Bandit for about $6 ea. also, and I'll bet the XL250 was a Showa fork.
