Author Topic: UK Paint question (Read 3200 times)

As u all prob know the production of acrylic/oil based paint is now banned in the uk BUT ive heard some places still have a lot of old stock, Any one know of any of these places as rattle cans cant give me the finish i want neither does the new water based stuff.

Dids, if you can't get a pro finish with spray cans it's only down to yourself, sorry mate.

If you prep the job well, there is no reason that you won't get a perfect finish.

theres nothing wrong with the finish apart from spatters ive tried 4 different brands now all start spitting when the can is half used, i used to work in a paint shop and theres nothing wrong with the way i spray or prep, most the spatters i can sand out but there some pretty large ones and as im using metalic paint the spatters ruin the finish, Ive been told that most metalic rattle cans do this, also i disagree about a pro finish with rattle cans, Depending on what finish you want highly depends on the thickness of the paint also the amount of paint applied with each coat and the angle of the spray these can all be adjusted on a spray gun or air brush but not with a rattle can, rattle cans are made for touch ups and small areas, all the time i spent in the paint shop i dont think we ever sprayed a car or bike with rattle cans and even the old timers had a hard time touching up with rattle cans.

So why not get a compresor and a gun and do it right?

Todays paints are so much better than the old stuff anyways...why use rattle cans or the old stuff?

I see what you mean Dids, didn't know you were reffering to metalic.
I did the bike in my avatar with spray cans and it came out as good as any pro job.
On my own bike that is black, I used cans to do the tank and it came out better than the bodywork that I had done in a pro shop.
I remember the few times I have used metalic and yes, it did spit.

i have got a spray gun and compressor i intended on using that for the lacquer finish but to save some cash i tried doing the colour with rattle cans but didnt turn out right im having a hard time finding the colour i want in acrylic paint and water based is £32 for half a ltr thats to dear, plus ive worked with water based in the past it has to be thined rite down to go thru the gun properly and runs like hell also it has to be left for 24 hours to dry before you can put on the lacquer otherwise the water based paint reacts with the acryl lacquer.

Edit i was wrong its £32 for 1/4 ltr

Black is one of my fav colours to paint with i was gona do the bike black originaly with with a slight overspray of gold all over but i changed my mind, wish i hadnt now as this metalic green is a B***ard, It would be nice to see a few pics of ur bike in black might change my mind about the colour

Water based? How about polyurethane......

Basecoat/clearcoat works great too....especially with Metallics.

When I lived in Britain I found you have to sit rattle cans in hot water before you use them (particularly metallic) and get temps up to 70~80deg f. (they are safe to about 140~160 but probably not a good idea to boil them

) You'll still get some spitting, but not until they are almost empty.
Best to get at least 3 cans of preferred colour and as soon as they cool down from use swap and re-heat cans.
I've done a couple of tanks with metallic and had real good results. It helps if you can get tank up to temp as well (hair dryer in filler to warm it up works for me, switch it off/remove before spraying though)

I tried warming them up, no joy, must be crap paint.
And im trying to paint the tank, pannels and rear bit once i find some good paint im gonna put about 6 coats of lacquer on for a nice shine + a tough finish.

Lacquer aint exactly the toughest thing around.....I've found CLearcoat to be a hell of alot better.

It depends on how thick its applied, it usualy varies between 5-10 coats ive heard that some super cars come with 16+ also the lacquer needs to be baked to harden right through, The clear coat you mentioned is prob just the same thing with a different name but as ive never seen it i cant say for definate. Im gonna bake the tank Il just remember not to do what ive seen some one do in the past and bake it full of petrol.

Clearcoat is a Urethane. Lacquer is well Lacquer, problem I've found is the thicker it gets the less tolerant of damage it is....plus why do 6, 10 hell even 20 coats of lacquer when 2 of Urethane will work?

How long ago were you in the industry...Lacquer is well...crud compared to modern paints. Lots of coats...and it still shrinks and fades worse than any modern urethane paint.

I can't legally mix Lacquer paint at my job in the US, but urethanes are perfectly legal. Water based is coming along and we have a mixing bank for that, no 24 hour dry time or anything and you still use Urethane clear coats over the top of it. The total VOC's are still lower than a through and through urethane paint job and that's what they are looking for. You should at least be able to get an acrylic enamel of some sort that is legal though...you'll need a hardener for any decent ones though. Things have changed a lot in the paint/body field in the past 10 years.

Modern paints spray easier, cover better, are more durable, and all that good stuff...

Lol, yeah the government has come down hard on VOC regulations(US and UK), and shipping prices have made paint prices go up...not to mention the toners that are made without lead are more expensive to make. Reds, Yellows, and some blues tend to be the most expensive...then anything with a lot of mica/candy/pearl in it is up there too usually.
