Engine rebuild questions for an average Joe
« on: October 05, 2008, 03:18:46 PM »
Hi, I've decided to do a complete (top & bottom) rebuild on my Cb750K. I know it's gonna cost some bucks, but can anyone inform me of what I can expect to replace for sure? What I mean is the things I should replace no matter what their condition. At least this way I will know what I need to go ahead and purchase. Any info would be great.

For sure? Gaskets, other than that, have no idea. How many miles are on the bike? How hard has it been ridden for the past 30 years? Lots of variables. Have you done a compression check? If that checks out and your gears are shifting fine, then why bother?

if you're going to bother going all the way through it, i'd replace all gaskets and seals, primary and cam chains, cam tensioner parts, piston rigns, and have the head serviced. most crank and rod bearings i've measured- even on high mileage bikes- were within wear limits, though they they do tend to wear unevenly. it doesn't hurt to replace them and rod bolts while you're at it, but i'd say bare minimum will suffice most of the time.

there's a thread covering most of this... search "rebuild for dummies."

My suggestion is if your in there and you want to do it right, Balance the crank and the pistons and rods. I did this on my last stock rebuild and it runs so sweet.
Also

Replace the Cam Chain tensioner, Look at M3 racing websight.
Replace the Cam Chain.M3 once more
Replace the valve springs once more look at M3 racing.
Replace the Studs with HD studs, no more oil leak forever.
Other than that go by the book and keep asking questions i'm there are allot of other sugestions on how to spend you money. O i Use M3, but i'm sure there are other place to get up grade parts.
Good luck
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.
