Flickering tachometer
« on: September 18, 2005, 08:14:42 AM »
Firstly, hello and thanks. I've had a 1978 CB550 F1 for just over 3 weeks now. I live in France and bought it off a guy in Toulouse who had had it 10 years and spent a small fortune on it. The 3 1/2 hour ride from Toulouse to my home in the Lot et Garonne was great and a good introduction to the bike. Only problems were 1) difficultly in changing gear (solved by putting some free play in the system and after scouring this web site for tips- hence the thanks and 2) a badly flickering tachometer thats swing up and down a few thousand revs at a time. Any ideas on how to solve this greatly appreciated please.

Hello and welcome to the board.  The flickering tach might be caused by a lack of lubrication on the inner cable.  It could also be caused by binding of the inner cable due to some damage to the exterior.  Try lubing it first.  If that doesn't work it may be time for a new one.

Hey Stevey
We used to go to the French Arabian Breeders Cup in Toulouse every year, was a nice ride from Stuttgart.
Sounds as if your cable is either sticking or routed so that it is kinked.Try some graphite cable lube.
Edit: oops ,you beat me to it Mike ;D
