Tire suggestions
« on: October 02, 2008, 06:34:28 PM »
My Tires are dry rotted, so now I need some new ones. There are an overwhelming amount of choices, and I have never bought motorcycle tires before. I would love to hear your collective opinion on what  I should buy. Here is what I have on my 1977 400f as of now:

Front Tire:
Bridgestone Battlax 45F
100/90-18 56H

Rear Tire:
Bridgestone Battlax BT 45R
100/90-18 61H

I know the "100/90-18" is the width and height ratio and I know that H is the speed rating. Im not so sure about the others.

Oh, and Im not looking for anything super sticky or super cheap, somewhere in the middle would be preferable. Thanks in advance for taking time out of your day to help out a noob.

I like tires made out of rubber...........black is my color of choice.   ;) ;D

Sorry, I couldn't resist.  ;D

I got a set of Avons from my local shop.  Pretty gummy, and priced right!

Avons are good, so are Michelins, Bridgestones, Continentals, Pirelli's and Dunlops. Just don't mention Metzlers, they're rubbish! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I have had terrible luck with Cheng Shin Hi Max tires.  My Barracuda Chens seem OK.  I order from JC Whitney but it is a good idea to call them on availability.  They will email you in a few days to a week with a message that parts are unavailable and your order has been cancelled.  maddening.

I got an email today from "Old Bike Barn" offering new old stock (although I don't know how old and how hard............) Dunlop F11 tires for only $39.95 if you're quick, and prepared to trust those asssholes at OBB who have a terrible reputation of screwing their customers............  ::)

Matt, how'd you get a 19" on the rear? Here's from the tech info:

Tires
Front  3.00x18in
Rear  3.50x18in

and from the magazine article:

I like my Bridgestone BT45s, Bridgestone Spitfire S11's are a cheaper alternative.

Matt, how'd you get a 19" on the rear?

That was a typo. I updated the original post to the correct size of 18 on both wheels. Thanks for pointing it out, that could have been pretty confusing.

I can honestly say the spitfires are good. I will probably get them again on my bike. Not cheap but wont kill the wallet either. They are a good budget tire.

Is there much of an opinion on IRC tires?
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

So after looking on about 20 different websites it seems like finding 100/90 on both the front and rear wheel is going to be a little difficult (I haven't found any yet). Bridgestone does have the 100/90 for the front but a 110/90 for the back. Would that work? How much room to I have to play with those numbers as long as I keep it on the same rim size (18in)?
Thanks again for the links and advice.

I went for correct inch size tires rather than metric.  I wound up at Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse www.mawonline.com

 1 42787 AVON AM26 ROADRIDER 3.25-19 FRT   030500 $74.95
 1 42768 AVON AM26 ROADRIDER 4.00-18 RR    030600 $91.95

Tax:$0.00   Shipping:$33.95   Total:$200.85

went with motorcycle-superstore.com for tubes and rim strips.

I'm liking them so far.  I've pushed them quite a bit(scraping pegs) without a loss of grip.  I actually liked riding on them in the rain.  They're the first brand new matching set I've run, so I don't have tons of experience with different brands and how they last and which are grippier, etc.  I was just happy to find inch size.

all tyres are good now  but what you have are probably the best.
They did a road report on our bike and came up with bridgestone top of list.
