Any internet detectives want to help me out?
« on: October 02, 2008, 10:27:23 PM »
I think someone is trying to rip me off.  ::)

Here is the deal, I was sitting in a local park reading and a guy came up to me to talk about my bike. As an off chance I told him I was looking for a little bit of work for gas money while I was in town and if he owned/managed any business and was looking for employees. I was in luck and he did need help with the small construction and handyman type stuff he manages. I Helped out with some random construction type things. Sheet rock and insulation and door frames and such. I Worked a bit over a couple weeks and he told me whenever I needed the money just to let him know. The last two days I was supposed to work (and get my money) he never answered nor called which he does on days that I work to let me know what things we will be doing. The day I was supposed to head out of Syracuse was coming up so I gave him a call and asked if I could come by and pick up my money, He immediately said "Today's not a good day" hmmm... Whatever, I gave him the benefit of the doubt as he could be having something going on. I was supposed to leave in the morning the next day (as in 5am) and he knew it. I asked him if he would be in my part of town the next day and if its not too much trouble if he could just drop off the money to the house I was staying at, someone would be there and could accept it. "Yeah sure, that's no problem I will stop by tomorrow and drop it off". Even though my plans had changed at the last minute and I was staying a few more days, I "left out" that fact because I was starting to think he was planning on not paying me and that it would be a "in good faith" test to see if he had planned on giving me my money, since I would "be gone". So the day rolls around that he is supposed to drop it off, nothing so I tried calling him and no one replied to my calls. I left messages saying call me back and got nothing today. I would try calling from a diffrent phone but the he has both the house number and my cell. So I am starting to feel like he was just putting me off until I "left". I only really got tomorrow to solve this problem as I want to leave early Saturday because its my window of opportunity with no rain.

It is completely possible that something happened which requires his attention, family, hospital or what ever. BUT, if that's NOT the case I need to get on this pretty quick. All I need is an address but all I have is his cell number and name (not sure on the SP of the last name). Nothing came up on the simple searches for his number but I know people have ways to find out... Its not even a substantial amount of money but I need gas. If you think you can help me out with the address from a number PM me as I am not going to post the phone number obviously. I sure hope its nothing and that I will get my money and thanks for the help!

Try this link: http://www.daplus.us/
It has worked for me in the past tracing people, you need a name and town to get results. ZIP codes work best but try anyway. It sounds to me he is out to screw you. As you say, he figures that you will be gone soon so why pay you?

Member troppo got me the possible address ;D

It matches a few other clues that he has given and I am almost positive that its it. I guess will think about my options to take care of it, I will let you know how it goes.

After rechecking it turns out that its still not the right address :(

I guess I might have to pay the 5 bucks to do a one time number search.

Edit: I think I got it narrowed down to 2 possible neighborhoods, if that helps any...

Edit 2: I tried from my phone today, nothing. Tried from someone else phone and guess what, he picked up. says he "got out of the hospital 3 hours ago" right after responding surprised when I told him I was still in town. Claims he will give me a call tomorrow afternoon and that we can figure it out from there, only after telling him I plan on leaving in the early morning ::)

says he "got out of the hospital 3 hours ago"

Actually, rude as it sounds, that's not your problem. Sure, things do  happen, but his "problem" has now become your problem. You probably worked for cheap, but it seams like now he wants to stiff you on the discount labor you provided. I'd be pissed.

What about the jobsite? Were there people there who know him? You worked for (with?) him for a few weeks, did he give any information (Like bars he goes to,etc) that would help you find him?

Why dont you post the name of the town & state and maybe there are members in the area who could help.

I worked primarily one job site and although it would take a while I could find it again from memory, if not google maps. Which I am doing now. However I am not sure that the people who live in the house we worked on would know WHERE he lives since its was just a private residence. I am surprised that some one, who seemed so well off, would even risk something like this for not even that much money. We are talking under 100 bucks here but that's a lot of gas miles on a bike. I really don't feel like taking the trouble to find a job some where else, because here I had the benefit of a house to stay at. And I have to get south because it is getting far too cold here.

While racking my brain for details I also realized he had pointed out his house inadvertently while we were on the way to a site once. I was making idle conversation and asked what part of town he lived in, it just so happend that at that moment his house was visible from the side of the freeway. He laughted and said" wow, good timing its right there" Which seemed genuine. This was a while back. After looking over google maps on the freeway I found 2 neighborhoods right off the road where he said that. They match the style of houses that I remember and are in the right spot. I even remember that it was blue and on the west side and the end house on a dead end street which was visable from the freeway. (my brain hurt after trying to remember these details)
If it makes any difference this is in north Syracuse NY.

Edit:  ;D I think I found it...

Thanks guys, I HAD to get south out of the cold and right now I am typing this from Raleigh NC. Before I left I talked to my uncle out there and all his buddies from the local gun club. They said they would help me out if I asked ;D

Since I am not there anymore I am going to give him maybe one more day, he said he would drop by or at least call me the day I left. I asked my uncle and no one stopped by nor did I get a call. I am going to give him one more day, then I am going to "give" my problem over to my buddies after one more call. I doubt they will be as nice as I am. I will tell you as soon as soon as it comes to a (possibly entertaining) solution.

And by the way I am going to try and find Deals gap today and camp there and ride around a bit before moving on. If anyone in that area wants to ride let me know. Or anyone around the east coast between Florida and NC.

Thanks guys, I am in Alabama now. I ended up heading west, I would have thought that it would have been warmer but the nights were getting a bit to cold and I was over it. Sorry fuzzy but all that weather scared me off  :(. When I got to the Alabama boarder my fender mounts exploded and then I got rained on for a solid 14 hours. I JUST got past that storm system so it should be clear sailing for a while.

Right now I am in Double springs Alabama and am going to take the 195 to the 13 then to the 172 to Hodges. From there I am heading west, I am unsure of the route. If there are any good roads or sites I should make a note of that you know, let me know and if there is anyone along that general direction between here and arizona that wants to ride, just let me know. Or if there is anyone along that way that will sell me an master cylinder cap (As I have no front brakes now, because some asshat stole my cap, and my extra can of gas) And/or will let me use their welder to fix my rear fender mounts that would be awesome. My number is (480) 694 2520.

Sorry I found this thread too late to be of any help.

If you make it to Oklahoma City (actually Norman - about 15 miles south of OKC) I've got a MC cap you can have.  I may have some other gear you might be able to use.

If you get close, drop me a line.

Well I was about to run of out of money, my main seal blew out and I got a job offer back home in a machine shop (And the owner used to build 750s! ;D ;D ;D ;D) and I really really want to build another bike. So I did the most reasonable thing, Bought a gallon of Rotella T, (went through 4! total) and got the the main interstate and floored it home from Louisiana. The widest part of Texas IS possible in a day.

Anyways thanks for all the offers, I wish I would have come across a library to check here because I most definitely would have stopped by a few members, but its just so hard to plan out sometimes if you don't know where or what time and have limited internet acess. I now know to get contacts in order ahead of time :( Thank you SO much for the offers. I am bummed about not getting a chance to stop by any fellow SOHC'ers but now I know how to plan it for the next trip.  Oh yeah I am going to build a 750 and do it again, but for longer  ;D Once I get the film back I will do a trip report.
