Replacing fork ears & fork boots...
« on: October 03, 2008, 05:19:11 AM »
Is it necessary to completely remove the forks to replace the fork ears and boots?  I've got both coming in to replace rusted / ratty parts and I don't want to pull the whole she-bang if I can avoid it.

Bike's a '76 750K w/ no mods... Course I guess I could replace the steering head bearings if the whole thing has to come out.   ::)

You'll have to drop the fork legs out to replace the boots and ears as the upper tubes pass through them.  Once you're to that point, dropping the lower tree to replace the bearings isn't much extra effort.

Take a close look at those boots when you take them out.  My KO has a top and bottom to the boot and has to go back the right way for them to attach to the bottom of the fork ear.  I imagine yours is the same.
