Wow.  Very sad.

He was under contract to play me when the movie about me was made.
(Script hold-ups)  I can't think of anyone else who looks like me...

One of the truly great actors and even greater people.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

haven't seen too many of his movies, albeit a few.

a fine, charitable man.  the money and fame never seemed to get to him... one of the few to be looked up to.

It's a loss for all of us. From what was said on here when posted that he was ill,
I think it was Bobby that met him, he was a regular fellow as well. Sure was a rare
bird in Hollywood.

And married to the same woman for 50+ years. Equally rare in Hollywood.

Ernie, irony is lost on some...

Nice man, I know one young driver who worked at his Connecticut shop while trying to get laps.  The kid loved Newman.

Aggravating to think about.

Just caught this on the news. Although it was inevitable it still is a somber moment. I very much agree to the previous comments about his character and his remarkable marriage.

My grandmother passed at 82 due to complications from smoking. In the end something is always going to get us... but cancer and strokes are not fun ways to live out ones remaining years.

Rest in peace Paul.

BTW Hef, very cool picture.

Yeah! >:(  Cigarettes >:(  My Mom passed away at the age of 75 in Feb 2002. She didn't quit until just a few months before she died. :(  Oh, she made some attempts but there were her friends, smoking away while my Mom was attempting to quit. Okay, I've said my peace about smoking.

Sure is a shame that Paul Newman is gone. He was quite the man alright! ;)

Yeah, it's sad that another real "screen legend" has passed, I guess what's really sad is that it's another reminder of our own mortality, I can still remember when he was a (relatively) young man! Now where did I put those cigarettes............  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

i can still remember dad taking me down to bob sharpe datsun  when i was a little guy (30+ years ago) to look at the race car they kept in the showroom. as an early teenager i got to say hello to and shake Mr Neumans hand, i remember him as being a regular guy, it was like talking to one of my uncles or a neighbor. he and my dad shared a birthday, same year too. tobacco killed em both too.

When ever I'd go to Lime Rock he was on my short list of faces I hoped to see.

This guy was a class act.

Being Canadian I would have to say Slapshot c.1977 was one of my favorites, it's just damn funny, plus his character shared the same first name as me, Reggie "Reg" Dunlop, In 1980 I was 10 the first time I saw this movie and thought it was super cool he had the same first name. He was a great and generous man.

Don't know if it's true but I had read 'Slap Shot' was one of his favorites too. I loved that flick... such a departure from his usual rolls. Liked that he drove a (Pontiac) GTO in the picture too.

Get the DVD and there's interviews with the 'brothers'... the guys with glasses, forget the name just now.

I liked Torn Curtain (Hitchcock), 'Sundance, Hud, Coolhand Luke, but a major oversight is not having saw Winning, the movie that introduced him to his great passion outside his wife.

A man of character.

I saw PL Newman MANY times racing at Lime Rock Park in the 80's. He was a great guy and a great racer. Always friendly and very open, and never an attitude. Plus he REALLY deserved the title of Ole Blue Eyes.   :o

I would have LOVED to see Newman and McQueen race against each other!

What a life he lived!! Godspeed Paul!

The Hanson Brothers. Real Cementheads!

One of the funniest stories I heard about Paul Newman was about his wife being upset she couldn't retrofit the the shower in their home with a garbage disposal because he liked to eat cantaloupe in the shower...

Oh God that those clip is are a riot!

Yeah, the Hanson brothers! They were the best; the interview in the special features part of he DVD is great!

He did the movie 'Winning' at 43 according to the eulogy on SPEED and it seems he started his (successful) racing career, winning 24hrs of Le Mans, Daytona, etc... after that. So there's hope for me yet!! :D
