I think I need more links in my chain
« on: October 11, 2008, 01:25:25 PM »
See the indicator line, it looks a bit far up.  Currently, it is a 120/90-18 and am going to a 130/90-16.  There is very little space between the tire and the bar that holds the brake hub.

What amount of links in a chain will I need to accomplish this?  The rear sprocket is a 48 tooth (I tried counting, lol), I guess normal up front.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

In my opinion, tight.  It sounds like it creeks when the wheel is turned.

Well it looks like your on the scale you could add one more link so it's not so tight.

It is OK. If it is a new chain, you will get a fair amount of slack the first time you ride it.  I have had to make my own brake stay bars because of the 4 inch stretch and wide tires on my bobbers.  I use 1/2" OD steel tubing and weld tabs into notches cut in each end.  drill and spritz with krylon satin black and off I go.

I was figuring it should be a little further back as it is but I was also thinking that it should go back a bit further to give a tad more room to fit the 130 in there and miss the brake hub bar.

So you figure a few more links should do it?  Where can I get these?  You new this question was coming, lol.

I doubt this is a new chain, it looks like it has been there a while and was there when I got the bike a month ago.

Well if your goal is to make the other tire fit ( that's your call ) i don't think anybody here can give you and exact number of links to add to acheive this but you also say you don't know how old the chain is but what you can do it take it off and lay it flat on the ground and pull on each end to see how much of an arch it makes. A new chain has very little arch and a used chain well you get the idea but i would determione is that chain you have is worth keeping first for the sake of safety.

It sounds like it creeks when the wheel is turned.

and most likely due to being old... get yourself a new chain w/ 4 or 5 more links.  usually less than a hundred dollars well spent.

I have seen 90 and 100 link chains.  What is a good start?

Most new Heavy duty Chains come with about 110 links....More than long enough for a 750.

126 link 530 HD chains are less than $30.00 from JC Whitney online.  I have used 10 or so of them.

Tire size shouldn't be an issue unless there is a typo in your initial post.  You said you were going from a 120/90/18 to a 130/90/16.  Then as discussed in probably many chain posts, don't put a new chain on old sprockets, or vice versa.  These two items wear at the same rate and replacing one without the other will cause premature wear in a fraction of the normal wear time.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

With a 530 chain, 2 extra links will move the wheel back 5/8"
