Paint experimentation Candy Gold
« on: October 06, 2008, 03:04:49 PM »
Yeah I am a cheap SOB.

I'm trying to come up with a replication of the Candy Gold.

I've yet to come up with a base coat that will work with the Candy I have but I'm working on finding the Correct silver base.

I have some cool Titanium silver that worked great on the Ruby Red Candy's.

I'm going to try that, silver, and a combination of the two.

I have an Original Candy Gold Tank and Side covers so we'll see how it goes.

WOn't know anything till I get the Candy Gold sprayed on the test pieces and get it out in the Direct Sunlight....

But its entertaining the hell out of me this afternoon.... :D

It seems like a worthwhile pursuit. It will take some tinkering. I wonder what the effect of time and sun would have been on the original parts? Are you matching to a 30 year old sample? Just food for thought.

Yeah but theres a good color match under the tank trim and where the seat protected it these 30+ years.

First attempt.....FAIL. Too green in tinge.

It's an interesting color, probably the best they ever used. A bit here and there and you will probably get it spot on.

Nope I believe thats a lawn mower!  Thats a pretty cool pic you have there.  How nice it would be to have the space of a hanger, working in a shed sucks
It takes an idiot to do cool things, thats why it's cool

Looking good Tim and I know you`ll get it - candy gold is by far the best colour there is....now you just need to get a white stripe decal rather than the black (saw this on an early UK model and it looks great!).

If you need a tank to practice let me know  ;) ;)

cheers

If you can't get it, I can give it a shot at my paint mixing shop here...i would need someones sample of something with the original color...just for a few days. Then I can have a formula any NAPA that can mix our Planet Color line of paints could make. Or any Sherwin Automotive Paint store could too...

Well heres the problem with matching.....The candy.

Now I suppose you could get a color that matches the candy gold. Possibly in a base coat clear coat.

But its not going to have that original candy depth.

So your stuck with a silver base and a candy clear.

Unless your paint shop can come up with a base and candy clear that are going to match then your back to square one.

Whatever you put on a base coat changes the base coat. If you change the base coat you change whatever yo have to put in the clear/candy coat.

Now...the modern candys are a tad different then the stuff Honda had.

SEM, House of Color, etc...none of thier candy gold matches the Honda Candy.

See I believe I'm using the correct Silver base....its the tint of the candy gold thats problematic.

As far as SEM goes the California Candy is what I'm using.

You can get close with a Gold base per thier color chart (wee bit too Brown). You can also get close with a white base (wee bit too orange).

So I have three more test pieces with the Base Silver Drying as I type this.....Gonna try adding some red tint to the California Gold Candy.

I've done some serious searching on the Gold and have not yet found a mix on the web.

Take a look at every Gold bike you see it seems to be a touch different then every other Gold bike..

I was referring to 3 stage candies, like you are talking about, silver base with a candy midcoat, then a clearcoat on top of that. I can match that and give the number of coats of candy needed to match that color as well. Along with the formulation for the candy if it needs to be altered to match, or the base silver...you'd be surprised at what I can match. I've matched a few custom candy's and one factory harley candy in recent months.  But yeah it depends heavily on the number of coats of the candy, and our candies can be tinted/altered themselves as well as the silver bases. The Planet Color line I mix gives freedom to mess with all that stuff to get a match, pretty much just like what you are doing. Except I have a crapload of sprayouts already done and chips with multitudes of candies very similar to the honda one. So i'd have a formula for the silver base, and a formula for the candy mid coat. As well as a "number of coats" recommendation to match that color if that makes sense.

Makes perfect sense...thats what I'm experimenting with.

Its the tint vs coats vs base.

So yeah we're definitely on the same page there.

I'd be glad to ship ya a sample and let you do the work lol.

good luck with this project! i know from my cabinetmaking business that matching colors/finishes is just about the most difficult part of a finish project.    for what it's worth, i've got a stock candy gold '72 that's been covered up it's whole life and i can send you pics of it if you wish.  i've found that color is so often in the eye of the beholder and the lighting you're working with.  not an easy job to say the least.... you must be one stubborn guy!  ;D

colin's absolutely dead-on.  coating weight, base colors, number of coats, etc etc.  it's awesome if you can work with a resource with colin's expertise as they've 'been there and done that'..or can get there without very time consuming trial and error.  matching finishes is more of an art than a craft and it takes some real talent to pull it off.  good luck!

Yeah I have a Gold set of tank/covers. Sun faded on the top of the tank....but where the seat covered its pristine.

So covered there its just the trial and error.
