Hi. I've also been experimenting with the Candy Gold for a K0/K1 setup and thought I'd add my findings into this pool of knowledge.
1)
You may have prematurely discarded your first selections for being too bright and too green. I would encourage you to revisit those selections. I found that by thinning them even further with clear and adding only a drop of red, they can work.
I believe the solution is to apply three thin layers of the candy gold onto a darker silver base. I also believe that adding red is a dead end, as it quickly takes over the tint and turns the work orange.
2)
I found that the darker the base silver, the brighter yellow turned out better, but the greener it looked.
Conversely, the more white/bright the base silver, the more red was needed in the candy yellow, but I could put on three or four layers before loosing it.
The best silver base turned out to be from a rattle can as per the attached picture.
So far, I haven't been able to match the Candy Gold, but the combo that came closest was:
- Silver Base from Dupli-Color
- Metallic Yellow #602 mixed with 2 parts clear. 2ml of Crimson were added to 60ml of the mix (the first tin from the right).
The 60 ml jar was thinned again with lacquer thinner for use in the sprayer so that 3 coats were needed to obtain consistant colour.
Although close, the final result using jar #3 was too bright.
(FYI. Jar #1 was too red and opaque, jar #2 was too green)
If I had noticed this thread earlier, I would have taken some pics before respraying the silver base.
I tested using an actual tank, because I found that the curves and bulges of the tank make the colours come out differently than when I used samples from flat pieces of cardboard.
I hope this info is useful to others.
