btw, anybody use Pro Circuit PC-03 as an assembly lube? Guys at the Honda shop said that's what they use instead of redline or others...

Cannot really tell the difference from the others though. Maybe because I don't tear it apart right away and look for wear?

I re-read paulages hybrid thread last night (about 16 pgs anyway) and am wondering now if the 550 carbs are going to be sufficient. He used 750s but was at 718cc vs my 573cc. I think I'll start with the 550s and go from there.

i have a set of '79 cb650 slide carbs i'd let go for cheap if you'd like to try those over the 550 carbs. they have accelerator pumps, but adjustments aren't quite as easy as with the older carbs. it's the mains you'll have to #$%* with the most anyway, and those are readily available.

they're in good shape (the bike only has 3000 miles on it), but i'll be in europe until early june if that affects your decision. i have no use for them though, so just let me know. i could probably get someone to pack them up for me too if necessary.

Soooooo, began getting the lower cases together (it's going ok, thanks for asking) and was looking at the upper case and realized something was not looking quite right. (See attached foto below for visual aids).

Now, I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but I want to hear from the audience: replace curvy stud or not replace curvy stud?

OK lads, ready to "mate" the lower cases. Anything look weird, out of place or just dead wrong?? I've been working through the manual and all of the shots I took during de-construction and I'm pretty confident, but, never hurts to ask...Also, do I butter up the transmission good with lube?

i'd lube the trans gears a little (i use a little 50W/40) if they're new and sticky. you didn't really need to lube the cases where the big outer trans bearings go, as the don't move against the cases. as far as the gears in the trans go, i wouldn't worry about it. the little needle bearing that has a mini oil pump going to it (end of the countershaft) could use a squirt. just kick the oil through a little before starting. being a wet sump engine, the oil's right there anyway...

Well, I need to know if I'm missing an oil seal here (refer to pic below) just up and left of the left-hand bearing set-plate hex nut, my disassembly pics (of which this is one) show what looks like a seal. My cases were blasted and I'm not finding it in my parts bags, and, to boot, the parts fiche(s) is/are not turning up what I think I'm seeing. Is there supposed to be a seal there or am I hallucinating yet again??

Now for the clutch issue...

Bought the Barnett kit awhile back and was surprised to see one thicker (3.4mm) friction disc out of the 7 total (other six are 2.7mm). Emailed Barnett at the time and they insisted this was correct and that the wider tabs in the thicker friction plate would put it as the last to go into the stack, since the basket slots are tapered. Only thing is, they are not tapered and the thick disc does NOT fit. Apparently they should all be 2.7mm...

There is not supposed to be a seal there. That clutch disc you mention with the wider tangs is meant for the 77-78 model clutch basket I expect.

Thanks, after staring at the photos again for awhile  I decided there wasn't one, that the LSD was to blame, once again.

I didn't know the 77-78 clutch baskets were different. Only bummer is, now I have to wait for an extra disc....

I've gotten most of the way on reassembling lower half. Just waiting on a couple parts to finish. Next comes the interesting part, mating the cylinders and mounting the ninja pistons. (Did I just say "mating" and "mounting" in the SAME sentence?! God I'm good...) Don't know if I'll be able to start on that tomorrow, still have too many projects rolling at the mismo tiempo. Gears all shift through so that's a good sign.

I'll be f-ing amazed if this thing actually works when I'm done.

Some progress shots...Started ringing the pistons yesterday and pulling together the rest of the stuff to cylinders/head. Part of my re-build time has been spent looking for the boxes of new parts that have been sitting around gathering dust for the last couple of months.

We're gettin it, tho...

Ample Kroil as well with some heat on the casing but it's not moving. I think I might try just sliding the block and head on to see if it's going to be an issue or not. Any thoughts on this strategy? I've got a replacement in hand but it won't do me any good if I can't remove the old one...

May seem like over kill....

I usually cut them off as flush as possible. then drill with consecutively bigger drills until I can remove it with an easy out.

I also *soak* it in as much lubricant as possible and use heat when trying to remove.
