Question re: carb kits /Air Filter/ Points, yada, yada
« on: October 08, 2008, 09:41:09 AM »
OK,

Looking for the strait poop on parts. It's time to tune up my 1976 550K..

Do I have to buy OEM HONDA Points or are others ok. Will the less expenive points really cause me a problem.

Condensors?

Carb kits ? I see various carb kits on Ebay, etc.

Jets? need #100 and #38.

Air Filter - ? Foam filter is in the orig air box now.. SHould I buy OEM air filter.

My  550Kwas having some stumbling issues under 4000 rpm. (I posted and you replied with some good thoughts)

As the PO just had the carbs "rebuilt" and I don't know what was done with Jets needles etc, AND there is a Kirker 4-1 is on the bike - - I figured I better start from jump street. Then I will know what has been do. Even if the right jets are in there, how do I know that the PO mechanice didn't run a drill thru them.

Anyway, looking for your input on OEM parts vs. "The other guys" parts.

And looking for links to recommendations for a place to buy the oparts thru.

I buy lots of parts from Western Hills Honda and they atre ery accomodation...but, I never know if I am being sold parts and overpaying or getting what I need.

Thanks in advance guys!

Bob

Check out the FAQ for vendors/retailers to order parts from.

As for what's better.... You usually get what you pay for with OEM.  There are always discussions going on about OEM vs NOS.  I'd do some searching on the forum and see what others have found.

This question comes up every now and then. Do a search for "OEM vs. Aftermarket" and I'm sure you will find a bunch of stuff.

The basics of it boil down to this:
 - OEM stuff tends to be of higher quality and will last longer, but costs more.
 - Aftermarket stuff tends to be cheaper, but you sacrifice duration.

That is a VERY general statement, I know that, but it holds true most of the time.

For my 75' 550F I always buy OEM Honda. Always buy the best, you only cry once. Just compare Honda points to aftermarket.
