needle clip position
« on: October 07, 2008, 09:13:21 AM »
I have went to the FAQ's about carburetion and couldn't really find the answer so I will ask this question. I have a 76 CB550 with the stock air filter and 4 into 1 pipe. The bike gets the blubbers down low when slowly rolling the throttle. Upon inspection of the jet clip it is all the way down in the 4th groove which is 2 lower than stock right? Should the clip be moved that low with just pipes and if not has anybody experimented with this setup that can maybe tell me what would be better, the stock location or the 3rd one down. I thought maybe just raising it one spot and see if it gets rid of the blubbers. Any insight would be appreciated.

Are there 4 or 5 possible clip positions?
Moving up one should definitely help, two should be money.

There are 5 positions on these needles and the clips were on the 4th one down. You said that 2 positions would be money. That would be the stock location at 2 down from the top correct?  Thanks

Im running pods and drag pipes, and I'm on the 4th position.
If you're just running a 4 to 1 I'd imagine the 4th would be a little rich. 3rd should be fine for what youre doing.

What throttle position are you getting the blubber? 1/8, 1/4, 1/2? There will be some blubber as you come off the pilots but it goes away with a little more twist. From what i've read and experienced thats natural.

Have you done any plug chops?

The stock setting is 4th groove from the top on the needle.  Info is in the carb FAQ.

Before tuning carbs you will want to do the complete tuneup checklist.  If the stock filter is old replace it as it can never be cleaned as new, and they get more restrictive with use causing rich conditions.  As a test, you can remove the filter and see if you blubber issues improves.  Conversely, you can apply partial choke to see if it improves at the throttle positions you are having an issue.

You really ought to look at your spark plugs, as sooty ones will also blubber upon acceleration.  Further, they will give you an indication about your combustion mixture.

Does it blubber with new clean plugs?
