IRC Tires, any good?
« on: October 29, 2008, 10:48:21 AM »
What's the word on these tires?  I've only used Avons, Dunlops and Metzeler on my old Hondas, and I just found out that IRC is one of the only, (maybe THE only), tiremaker that makes tires in the appropriate size for my NS400R:

F: 100/90-16
R: 110/90-17

Model is RS-310 DuroSport "Sport Touring" tires.

The fronts are easy, but NO ONE makes a 110/90-17 rear.

Good buys, or crap?

Dude, you win the thread.

I checked like a million other online vendors, (well, six), and none had the BT45 in 110/90-17.  They all had the appropriate front, but not the rear.  That solves it.

Thanks!!!!!

And you'll be much happier with those.

I would agree, but I have no firsthand knowledge of IRC quality. They are a huge manufacturer, capable of making a premium product, so I hope others chime in.

I bought a IRC "dummy" rear for my project to see if various things would fit, just cause it was cheap, but i would like to know if others think they are good tires.

IRC is fair.  Sort of like Ching Shens.
They're off-road tires are better.  I wouldn't use IRC for track days, but they'll get you around OK.  They won't last as long as the BT45's.

But the speed rating says it all.  And before you say that you don't need a tire rated at 110 or 130, the higher speed rated tires have benefits at 55.  It means a cooler tire at 55, and that translates into a tire that you will get more miles out of.  Without sacrificing traction.

Not so sure about that...
It's been a long time, but I seem to remember that tires get a higher rating because they have less rubber (less weight).

Somebody hep me here-?

You are correct.  Less weight=less mass being spun around=less heat.  They achieve this by getting a higher ply rating than there are actual ply's.  You'll see "6 ply rating" where it may only be 4 ply tire.  This also allows a softer rubber(more traction) without sacrificing too much tire life.

I have used the IRC Durotour tires for a while now, it rained a lot of the time time i was riding in Oregon so I was looking for a sticky tire and they fit the bill.  They do wear quick but I have only felt the m slip on wet manhole covers, and yes I did say manhole.

I'm probably gonna order from the posted site, even though their prices are a little high.  Most places have the 100/90-16 front around $83 or so and they're charging $117.  The rears are probably the same, but if they're the only game in town...

I might just order the rear and get the front somewhere else.

That did solve a big problem though.

I did a google just using the tire size. Try that and you might find another dealer that is cheaper.
