Wheel painting vs. powder coat
« on: November 02, 2008, 07:32:33 AM »
I know that powder coating is supposed to be stronger, but I was thinking about an old Mopar that I had and it had painted steel wheels. A lot of old muscle cars ran painted steel wheels and they held up well, so has anyone ever tried it on these bikes? I would guess the old Indians with black wheels were painted? Aside from the careful mounting of the tire, it should work with good paint? Right?

How well the paint holds up depends on Product used and prep.

I prefer an epoxy primer and a Urethane paint for durability.

No reason paint can't be as durable as powder.

i can't be of much help beyond this:  my brother-in-law recently purchased a used car and the dealer agreed to have the steel rims recoated.  the sub-contractor did an amazing job coating them and did the work with the tires still on the rims.  it came out flawlessly.  so the process is out there and it works beautifully but i don't know what it is.  perhaps this can give you a direction to search for a source.  good luck and keep us posted!
