Winker blinking speed
« on: October 10, 2008, 04:50:01 AM »
I think Winker just sounds funny. First time I heard a blinker called that was from reading the Honda Shop Manuals. Anyway, my bike is still new to me and as I go through the little bugs I found that the blinker speed is normal with the engine revving, but like a turtle at idle. I checked my battery voltage and that checked out good. Does this sound like a faulty relay?

Need more data.  Testing the battery voltage is a start (I'm assuming you did it with the bike off) , but what's the voltage reading at idle and when revving?

That said, replacing the winker relay is cheap, go with an electronic winker, they always blink at the same rate regardless of load.

Yeah, I checked with the bike not running. It was too late at night to check while revving.

Nah, it's the nature of the beast.  These bikes don't charge until you get the revs up, so the blink/winkers will flash slowly, your horn will sound weak or won't work at all, and your headlight may be a little dim (turn it off if you can to save your battery for starting, or use low-beam at least) .....at idle, but go to full strength when you get the revs up past......what's the magic number for a 750?  is it like 1300 rpm or more like 3000?  I know that while riding around town you should try to keep the revs up a little high/stay in too low of a gear, to keep things charging and not running solely off the battery.
Look at it this way, after cranking my 92 'cb750' ::)  to life last sunday morning at about 42 degrees out, the horn wouldn't beep until the revs went up. (I bumped it by accident going for the choke)

So what you're saying is that if my charging system is fine, a new flasher relay wont change anything?

Mine do the same thing only they're 'normal' at idle and race to the point of that buzzer sounding like a freaking siren with the revs up!

Yep, I'll be watching this one a little bit.

Get yourself an electronic flasher relay from the local auto parts store.  They (as in most of them) don't care what the voltage is, within reason, of course.  They usually require three connections, (+), (ground), and load.  Pay close attention to which wire is which so you don't fry the thing.
Mine works flawlessly, regardless of the rpm's.

Sporkfly, you may need to check the voltage your system is running at (with the engine running, and the revs up a bit) if your voltage regulator is misadjusted you could potentially be running a bit high.... Expert opinions please...??

If you need a new relay, I recommend Z1 Enterprises. My bike had a relay in there that made the interval between flashing really long. AND this one comes with the correct rubber holder that my bike was missing.

The old relays/wiring/sockets build up resistance then flash is  slow or not at all.

They then tend to flash when the voltage builds with Rev's.

You could put a new battery in the bike and it would still do it.
