Is bench syncing to a certain gap really necessary?

I mean, instead of setting all the slider to open to 1/16", 1/8", etc, why not just let them all be fully closed?
They'll get sorted out when you vacuum sync them anyway,  right?

I'm sure you could use fully closed. It's just easier to use a feeler of sorts with the bit to make sure they are pretty close.

It seems like some people don't vacuum sync them afterward at all. In that case getting them bench synced as close as humanly possible would probably be pretty important.
Personally, I've never bothered bench syncing them at all. I've never had a set that was too far out of sync to start the bike up and use my vacuum gauges.

Sure, if they all close at the same time. With 1/8" you know they are at the same point. With closed one might not start to move until the other 3 are 1/4" open.

So far, all I've done is vacuum synch and it has worked well enough for me.

I didn't know what the heck "syncing" was until I'd rebuilt and refitted my carbs, boy do I wish I had bench synced the little suckers! :(
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!
