Hello my name is Howard, and I am from Columbus Ohio.  I have been doing some research on buying a bike for myself, and stumbled across the CB750.  Hopefully I won't upset to many purists here, but I have loved the look of a cafe' racer style bike for years, and am researching different platforms to make one of my own.


Hopefully I will learn a lot during my stay here.

Welcome :)

One of the things I love about this site is that all styles of bikes, from the longest choppers to the shortest cafes to the cleanest concourse restorations, are welcome here.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I have been reading through the forum and digging up old tech articles for the last few days.

I haven't purchased one yet, but if/when I do I will post up pictures.  I found one about 2 hours where the guy says the base gasket needs to be replaced.  I am not afraid of turning a wrench, but I am slightly concerned that the engine will need machine work due to that.  Any thoughts?

I've been trying to read through all the tech articles on the motors, and I also had another rather noobish question.  I am a horsepower snob.  What is a realistic, and streetable horsepower number that can be achieved with these motors?  Is 120whp a pipe dream?  I don't want a drag bike, but the thought of having a motorcycle slower than my car bugs me :).  I think she should scoot as well as she looks.

Needing a base gasket simply might mean that it weeps oil.  Most of the SOHC4's do that, there are oil passage O-rings down there that shrink over time.

Though I do not have a cb750, I have read of 120hp+ with the 836/900 kits and so forth.  These engines are very rugged.  But even stock, most of these bikes are faster than your car, depending on which car it is.

Hello from another guy in Columbus.  There seems to be quite a few people from central OH lurking around on here.  Make sure you keep an eye out on craigslist.  I've seen several 750's go on there recently.  I actually looked at one a few weeks ago before I ended up with a 350F.  Good luck on your search!

I am going to be lazy and bump this.  I picked up my 1975 CB 750 today.  She needs some work, but she runs, and I got a great deal on her.  I will post up picks soon.

I would ask how fast your car is.  A stock 750 will blow the doors off most cars.

+1, HP can't be considered alone, also consider "power to weight ratio".

I'm at work, but hopefully will snap some and host them tomorrow.

So far she needs the front caliper rebuilt (it's not even on the bike)
Clutch cable (I think, the clutch engages way out, clutch may need rebuilt)
Accelerator is a bit sticky. I think it is the handlebar controls as the carbs were just cleaned.
SpeedO doesn't work. (Cable)
Needs a Battery
Some small cosmetic stuff.

I am researching parts today, and will start making orders tomorrow.  I am pretty excited about this whole project.

In response to the cars vs bikes comments.  I don't want to turn this into that type of thread.  My car is a 94 Supra Turbo that makes 460hp/500ft lbs of trq off the bottle.  I don't have a clean nitrous run on the dyno, but it should be making 550/550 on spray.  There are plenty of bikes that can beat it (and plenty of other cars for that matter), but I normally have no problems with 600cc crotch rockets.

Here is a video from a local fun day of me getting beat by a 550whp GT500.  Trails sucks, and no one could get traction that day. I think my 60' was a high 1.9, and his was a mid/high 1.8.  I don't have the slip handy.  No spray on this run, it would just spin when I tried to use it.
