Tony from Worcester, MA

Hello!

I must say, it was nice to find this forum after buying my bike, and after finding out it needed more work than anticipated...

I've got a "78 CB550K I bought a about a month ago from the original owner. It was advertised as "ready to ride," but that only lasted about 100 miles! A bit frustrating, but now that I'm into it, I find myself looking for similar bikes- seems I've caught the bug.

I have toured the archives a bit so far, and have gained a great understanding of the layout and quirks of my bike. My current issue is the battery not charging- which seems to be a typical problem with the three phase charging system it has. Needless to say, it's apart, and I'm troubleshooting, with my dreams of touring New England for foliage season shifting to a spring ride!

Thank you for the warm welcome, and I hope to get some pics up when I have it back together-

Tony

Nice, super clean.  What symptoms have you found in the charging system?

I bought the bike with the blinkers not operating, so as I was troubleshooting that (leaving the key on for periods of time) the battery went dead. Well, the bike came with a brand new battery, and thought that strange - it only lasting that long. Trying to trickle charge this new battery with an ancient charger, I fried it (different story altogether). Fine I said, I'll start with another new battery.

I rode the bike around for about 100 miles with the new new battery before the battery went dead. The day it went dead on me, the kick start had no resistance, but I was able to jump it and get it home. On the way home it was idling around 2,000 (much higher than earlier in the day) at stop lights.. I haven't been able to keep it running since, so I pulled out the main wiring loom and began going through all the connections, cleaning and so forth. I did find a broken connection on the ignition coil.

Wires to the stator and field coil look fine. I have not gotten to the point of using a multimeter yet, so if my wiring loom maintenance does notwork, that will be the next step for me.

I am still very much new to street bikes (have played with cars and rebuilt some small blocks) and am still trying to get a handle on this three phase charging system. The archives have been good so far - haven't had a particular question to post yet without trying out all the advice I've found thus far.

Hey Tony, Welcome to the group!  There's a great bunch of guys in the local area, lots of know-how and lots of good parts to trade around too.  I'm hoping to finally have my 750K3 as my daily ride this spring too, I'll wish us both luck.  Good to have you among us.
