If you are trying to put the one in the picture on a CB500, then I'd say no.
You need a three phase rectifier.  Connector has six positions with one position unoccupied.  Three wires from the alternator and two to the bikes system; +12V, and 12v return.

You don't say where you are from, but I had a bad rectifier on my 500 and I replaced it with with a new solid state one from
Farnell (www.farnellinone.....) or their other company in the US ..Newark. (The company ....not the place)
I got a new rectifier and heat sink for around $8.
Some say go with original but I recon if the new type were around when these bikes were being built they could have used these.
If you are stuck, let me know and I can get the part No's for you.

Thanks. I run oregon rectifiers on all my bikes, great stuff. I was asking because my buddy needed a new rectifier and I thought I'd pass an old one on for a temporary fix. It is 12/ 12 and six wire w/ one unoccupied... Just a thought.

It will probably work, then.  Just make sure the connector positions are correct.

NOPE a twin one will not work but any four one will including the dohc ones which have a built in electronic reg, you just need to know which wire goes where and somwhere i have a diagram

Rosko, the rectifier shown in your post is an old Selenium rectifier which is not very efficient. You must go for a modern Silicon rectifier. As other answers said, there are plenty of options open to you. Oregon is one that is highly recommended.

hi all
a little tip about old Selenium rectifiers easy to tell when they are faulty you dont even need a meter just smell it it will smell of rotten fish when faulty personaly when i come across them i automatically change them for a modern bridge rectifier (silicon)
