Shenanigans -
Great read Shenanigans and very well put together! This trip will stay with you for life. Now where are you going next? Id suggest Mexico/Central America but probably best to wait until the Swine flu has passed.

Thanks Andy, I have been giving it some thought on my next major trip and plan to see as much of this continent as I can. Alaska to as far down south as I can safely go. Its really to bad that all the continents are not connected by land. There is an awful lot of roads on the other side of the world! I plan on doing it on a 750 and (now that I know what to do) document it from the very beginning of building the 750 to the end of the hopefully 12+ month trip. This trip is a bit far off unfortunately, so for the near future all there is to do is work and look forward!  :-X

Have you read any of Ted Simon's books?  He rode his Triumph around the world in 1970, and then did it again on a Beemer in 2001.  Here's his website:

I am aware of it but I have not got around to reading yet. I only knew about Jupiter's Travels, I did not know there where so many!

good work man. i'm gonna pick up a CB550 and drive it 600 miles back home. that seems childish compared to your trip. lol

It can be done - I did a fly and drive with my CB750K4 - Boston to NC - rode the bike 900 miles over two days back to Boston. As others have said just make sure the bikes a runner and there are no issues with it.

IAmCitizenMe -
As for how much you spend on gas - a lot  ;). Simply work out the ~ number of miles and divide by average cost to fill up your tank (based on average price of a gallon of gas). E.g. 7000 mile trip, $8/tank/130 miles (maybe less for a 550) - cost for gas = $430. Not including snacks/drinks at the gas station  ;) ;D

cheers
Andy

Gas station snacks are a must. It's hardly an adventure without one-handing a hotdog on the road.

You can eat VERY very well if you eat from grocery stores and for very cheap. Fruits, tuna, vegetables, ears of corn , ect... are very cheap. I found I ate better on the road than I do at home  ::)

I have yet to smoke a cigarette. Probably because I roll my own... How rock 'n' roll would that be.

I need to travel. I am really looking forward to getting out of the city for however long. My friends are getting tired of me changing the subject of each conversation back to motorcycle travel. Their loss.

hey Shenanigans,
did you get a chance to skate at al?. are there any pics?i've been out your way twice. flew once and drove once. best times ever. as you know there are skateparks everywhere. not just cheezy tech deck parks, but real ones. chandler, mesa, scottsdale, pheonix, paridise. and thats just to name a few.
anyways this was a great read. you are a good writer, and you know what the reader wants via words and pics.
can't wait for the next journey.

did you ever find that 750 motor?
take care.
scott.

Hey Scott, while I was on the road I only got to skate every now and then. It was a lot harder than I thought when you dont know where your going to be. I skated almost everyday while I was staying in New York. So no pics of skating. Phoenix is amazing as far as parks go, I grew up skating at Chandler but now there are even more parks; Tempe, Pecos, Red Rock and Goodyear. And thank you for the kind words.

I did get a supposed hot 750 motor but after opening the top end it was stock so I sold it at what I paid. I am still looking for a hot 750 motor.

What is that rectangular box on your bike? I've seen them before but cannot figure out what it's for.

Yup, 750 pistons almost ready to go in. Just need need a headgasket and I am saving up for a port and valve job before it goes back together.

I assume lack of oil?

Awesome story.
Have you ever checked out the Adventure Rider message board?
I'm sure they'd love to hear your story.

I think I do this to my bike at LEAST once a week....

Has learned so far that..."complete" gaskets are never complete no matter where you get them, VHT Silver Case Paint is just as durable as painting your motor with chalk and cheap tire irons used with rim protectors are useless on 30 year old tires.

I'm wondering if the oil cooler could have been responsible for this? I'm getting all the ducks in a row for my trip and went back and forth on the cooler for my 550. In the cold I would the think the 550 would run the risk of not getting warm enough at highway speed rather than over heating. Did you add extra oil to compensate for the amount that would be in the cooler & lines (a decent amount I would guess)?

I did add extra oil to compensate but I dont think it was the oil coolers fault. Seeing as how it turned out I was running lean, very lean, the entire trip...  ;D

Yikes, did you have your plugs out at all during the trip? I think I'm going to do it without a cooler. I'm doing about 5k miles in September, so I'll change the oil around the 1,750 & 3,250 marks. Should keep the motor happy.

I had them out a few times, but I always chalked it up to being at different elevations. The bike seemed to run so well. I miss my airbox. It should be fine without the cooler, I think they are "actually" needed in very few situations. Dont think they should ever be needed with a stock motor, thats properly tuned anyways...

Dont forget to bring an extra tubes.
