Oil Light imitates neutral light
« on: October 15, 2008, 04:39:22 PM »
My 1975 cb550k1 developed a gremlin last week.

While the engine is running, the oil pressure indicator light goes on the same time the neutral light goes on - and turns off when you leave neutral.  Pressure seems fine - no loud valves and no difference in the light at higher rpms.

I noticed earlier that the oil light was intermittent when I turned the key on before starting the bike.  Sometimes it would glow brightly, other times, it was absent until after I started the bike and shut it off.

Suspect an electrical problem in a connector somewhere but was hoping someone would recognized this symptom.  Read something about these two indicators being related in the FAQs, but don't understand how.

Thoughts appreciated.  Thanks!

don't know about the 550 but on the 650 those 2 "sensors" are very close together. they are behind the left engine sprocket cover. could be touching possibly or there is a short between them in the wiring

Crack open the housing for the lights and first check to make sure they are both seated properly and that they are both good (not blown). That's where I would start. Then jump into what Scunny said.
