wiring/ oil question
« on: October 15, 2008, 08:44:15 AM »
hi everyone

im new to this forum and the world of the cb's...and this forum and people involved with cb's here in town are very helpful...thx in advance

after a barn find of two rotted out cb550's ('77/'78) i have been chopping them up to one running moto...and had a question of two parts

1. after using the 77 wiring on the 78 frame i am left with a small 2" green wire with a connector on the back of the "fuse box plate"  any idea where that may go? everything works. i.e. turn signals, headlights etc.  maybe some sort of ground wire?

2 on the stator side of the engine...it was leaking oil faster then i could put it in and verified with the non-running engine that it was missing a oil plug below the stator on the engine case....after a few test runs it still leaks b/c of the plug being pushed out....it seems to fit snug and the rubber o-ring looks new... any ideas on what it is called if i need to buy a new one? or is that normal for oil to be in that area? almost seems there should be a spring holding pressure on it. why is that plug even there?

thanks
matt

1. Spare ground for oddball 3-prong flasher used overseas.

2. The oil gallery plug is(should be) held in place by the stator cover.

Happy trails.

I think that there is a thread about that green wire. If I remember right, most 550 of that era had that wire hanging there, mine does. It is a ground.
Sorry, I'm not sure about the oil leak.

All the solid green wires in a stock Honda wire harness are 12v return lines connected to the chassis.

If you ever want to use a three terminal flasher relay, you'll want to use that "spare" green chassis ground.
