New to me!
« on: October 15, 2008, 06:59:04 PM »
Well, I had been looking for a winter project and a bike for my son, and it looks like I found both. The good: 2000 Suzuki sv650 with 2200 miles, original owner. The bad: left sitting under a porch for a while, with tranny and or clutch problems. I think it's clean-upable, and the price was right. Anyway, it'll be interesting. I'll post before photos and hopefully after ones eventually as well.

Ben,

I had a SV650 and it was a really fun bike to ride fast.  It was very sporty in the twisties and would wheelie easily good brakes also.  They make some pretty good power down low and in the mid-range, but they suffer up top IMO - typical of a V-twin.  Good gas milage as well and the insurance isn't to expensive.  They PO most likely rode it hard and fried the clutch.  Those trannys are real smooth when cared for properly.  I suspect that as the clutch was fried, the PO was most likely shifting with a clutch that wasn't engaging properly and may have buggered the early gears.  Over the winter, crack it and take some pics.  You can find parts easily for low $$$.

Well we brought it home today, here's a few photos. It had been sitting out for a bit and it'll require some cleaning up. I am hopeful that the shift linkage is the most serious problem I face rather than splitting the cases, but we'll see. For $500. I am pretty happy. I have the original red tank, but it has some rust on the interior, and I'll have to treat it before trying to use it.

What kind of trouble did you have? What year is yours?

Thanks!

Well, After puttering around for a couple of afternoons and an evening, I got the little V running today and took it for a spin. My tranny problem was due to shift linkage problems related to insufficient care. My biggest problems were related to the fuel system and I ended up buying a new set of carbs off ebay, which I had to rebuild anyhow, as whoever pulled them left gas in them. Anyway it's a fun little guy, very light and agile. It goes well above 5k but, as Sparty says, it doesn't have a whole lot of torque. It's a great first bike, and I'm hoping my son likes it!

Ben,

That bike should make pretty decent torque... about 62 ft. lbs.  For its size and weight, that is pretty good.  The new ones make 80.

Thanks for the info Art. It's difficult for me to judge performance on this bike, as my experiences for the past few years have all been on larger displacement bikes. Am I nuts to think that displacement and torque are proportional? Sure feels that way!
I think this sv is running close to as it should, but I still have to balance the carbs and mess with the clutch adjustment before I'll have a real good idea of what it does and doesn't do. I was really just so happy to get it going and find that I didn't have to split the cases to do so!

All best!
Ben
