leaking oil form exhaust port??
« on: October 14, 2008, 06:59:36 PM »
Greetings all, there seems to be an issue with my 72 750 >:(can ya  believe that?!?oil seems to be leaking out from behind the #4 exhaust port?why?what causes this malfunction?bad valve? best/worst case  scenario?Quick history:got the bike a few months ago,it had been sitting for a good year, put a new battery,it started, but sounded pretty sick, alot of popping and backfire, the bike had some really short pipes on it ,so i put on some standard length pipes, put in new point/condenser assembly, havent had the chance to drive it much(less then 20 mi)the bike has 50,000, .im pretty new at all this, and just want to know if this oil leak is something I can can let go for a while (it drips on to the pipe, causes alot of smoke)or get started with finding/fixing before i do more damage???/Users/administrator/Desktop/IMG_0531.JPG/Users/administrator/Desktop/IMG_0615.JPG/Users/administrator/Desktop/IMG_0616.JPG

is the oil coming from INSIDE the port or above it?. sounds like one of the "pucks" under the cam carriers has gone bad or shrank from sitting for too long. the actual replacement isnt bad but you DO have to remove the motor to get it all apart.

1. remove engine
2. disassemble the top end and remove the cam towers
3. eureka, you just found them. They seal the openings that lead to the nuts that hold the cylinders and head on

Pretty big job unless you just have to do this. I've been saving mine for the complete rebuild.

I have this issue as well and have been told it is probably a stuck valve or worn rings but that it won't be know for sure until the top end is opened up.  I've been getting everything I need together to do a top end rebuild.

I had this 10 years ago. With me it was valve shaft seal.

first thing is NEVER EVER use silicone in these motors! the stuff comes loose eventually and clogs up the tiny oil passages in the head and cuts oil supply to the cam/rockers. that and theres no way to get AT the pucks without removing the motor and cam cover and cam assembly.

i wouldnt worry about the leak till it comes time for the total rebuild. its not THAT much oil and tearing it down twice can be a pain
