More Carb Questions
« on: September 22, 2005, 08:04:38 AM »
Okay here's another question for all you carb experts out there. I have just installed a rebuilt set of carbs on my 750K0. They have been completely redone, new everything, gaskets, jets, needles, floats, the works. I have also switched from the original 4 cable system on the K0 to the system used on the post K0 models, with the bar and the push/pull. They have been sync'd but for some reason #1 runs cold (its in a garage where I have access to a Dyna).

I have access to another set of carbs. When I put these on the bike it runs well and no problem with number 1 (unfortunately these test carbs are not mine so I can't simply use them).

I have also recently installed new electronic ignition.

Any thoughts on what might be going on with #1?

As always, thanks for the replies.

I'm more familiar with the carbs you removed than the ones you have put on, but what does the plug for #1 look like after it has been run but remains cold? Is it wet with fuel, dry, what?
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Yeah I would say that if 1 is cold, first switch the 1 and 4 plug wires and see if the problem stays on #1 or moves to #4. If it stays, then you know it is strictly carb related. If it moves (which it should not) then you have carb AND spark issues on that wire. Wires do wear out and not transfer energy as well.

Otherwise, You may want to check your Air screw settings as there is a good chance you are running too rich. Also check your main jet settings. Check the plug as Bob said. That will tell you alot.

Hmmm. Cylinder #1 runs cold with your carbs but runs fine with a set of test carbs.  That tells me that there's something out of whack with your #1 carb.  If the plug is clean and dry then it might possibly be your float height is off (float valve closing and starving #1 for fuel).  If the plug is wet fouled then it might be an air screw issue (too much fuel, not enough air).  Also, were your carbs bench synched prior to installing them?  Make sure all the adjustments on your #1 match the other three, that the low speed circuits are clean in #1 and that the choke slides all open and close at the same time.

The reason I say to check spark is that if the spark is weak on the one wire, if you are misadjusted, it may not be firing. It is always something to check because if it is weak then it will get weaker and will continue to cause issues even if the carbs are adjusted right.
