Valves are normally set at room temperature. Maybe the engine has a series of numbers on it like CB750E-100234 ??

Hot valve adjust. Where did that come from?

Stock frame? Numbers are on head stock, and crankcases for the engine. They won't match.

I've never heard of any gas engine done hot.

The tappet clearance or valve adjustment or whatever you want to call it for all SOHC/4 CB's are set with the engine stone cold.

As for model, goto the front page of this site (http://www.sohc4.net ).  You'll find a link for each model right under the header.  Click your model then click on the "model guide".  There you will find serial numbers for each "model year".

A few notes:
- the frame and engine will have different numbers
- a serial number is made up of a "model" number (like CB750E-xx) and a the actual 5-digit serial number.
- the serial number part of the frame and the engine will likely be a few thousand apart even on a frame with it's original engine.
- your "title year" and your "model year" may not agree due to how bikes were registered back in the 70's.  Always a good practice to check what Honda thinks your bike is before ordering parts.
- An engine with a blank serial number had it's cases replaced at the dealer and the dealer didn't bother to transfer the numbers to the new case.
- If you have a '69 750 with a serial number of CB750E-1007414 or less, they have serious problems.  Best you just give it to me for proper disposal! ;D

Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Yeah, old Lycoming aircraft engines have hot clearances also but I was going to let let it go due to relevance.  Chevy corvette is actually done while running!  What a mess that was.  Interesting link though.  :)

The early holden 6cyl engines were set while running,  what a PITA that was, also the float level on the old stromberg carby on the same car was set while running, with the top half of the carb removed. But yes there are a lot of engines that have hot set valves.

Wow, that's all news to me. Always learning.

But, safe to say, all 70s era CBs are cold set. Original question.
