Fork Seal help
« on: October 19, 2008, 04:21:58 PM »
Hey All,
I have 1978 CB550K. I have take off the fork and even taken a clip up top out but I can not separate the top and lower fork parts. I have removed the screw at the bottom of the fork. I also need to get the old seal out. Any tips would be helpful. Thanks!

Glad we could help..... :-[    ;D

As for the seal, do a search on fork seal removal. I use a slide hammer with a puller adapter but some say the seal can be taken out with the careful use of a big slotted screwdriver. This topic has been covered quite alot and there may even be a thread in the FAQ section, but I'm not sure.

Give the parts a good cleaning while it's apart too. There will likely be a lot of grunge built up around the damper valves and laying in the bottom of the fork tube.

put the fork end with the seal in it, in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes.  the seal will pry out with a flathead screw driver. be carefull not to scratch the mating surface though.  if it doesn't come out easily put it back in the water for longer.   now keep in mind that aluminum conducts heat very well so the fork tube will get pretty hot pretty quick. also DO NOT try and cool it off (like running it under cold water) this may warp it's shape
