I know there's a clutch there......
« on: October 21, 2008, 09:04:23 am »
So I just finished putting back together a 1981 CM400C, figured out some fuel issues and finally got it to run. Then I noticed a problem.... I was able to shift through all the gears without ever having to touch the clutch. Bike didn't die or anything. Rear wheel turns, even with no throttle. Could the clutch cable be adjusted too tight, or is the clutch shot? Thanks in advance.

Clutch plates could be stuck from sitting a long time.

Is this while riding it? Or while is it on it's center stand? This behavior is somewhat normal for a bike while it is on the center stand.

This is the behavior on the center stand. Wanted to make sure that things were working the way they should before taking it on a test ride.

While on the centerstand?

Perfectly normal.  Every bike can be shifted thru the gears while on the centerstand (ie, rear wheel off the ground.)  At idle speed, right on up thru top gear.

Perfectly normal.

Thanks for the replies. You were all right, as soon as I got on to take it on it's virgin test drive since I got the bike and put it together everything went real smoothly. Clutch works fine as it turns out. And now, some eye candy......

My first road bike was an '81 CM400C. I loved that bike.   ;)
