I must say I like how jimmy's look. I like smoother surfaces compared to edges such as on shouldered rims. The looks just seem to flow better.

A month or 2 back we got to search through a pile if about 1000 bike wheels, had a good look at a lot of styles.. I think we got around 100 or more between 3 of us.. :o

Didn't get a real good look at the edges. The CB750F is back in the dusty corner of the shop, behind the other unfinished projects.

Well, I'm still battling what rims to use.  :-\

Here how my bike is coming along.
I feel shouldered rims could make the bike look 'fat', like its a porker.
Its looking trim (probably still heavy), so you all think smooth will give the trimmest/lightest looking bike?
I'm torn as I only get the choice once. Sometimes I get lost in concept...
Help me out!

Excels were around way before the SOHC/4s, and are a period correct upgraded wheel. 

I myself sprung for the shouldered Excels.

Excel makes both, shouldered and non-shouldered. So no Excel "style".

Not sure how long Excel's (Japanese?) been around. Borrani (Italy) and Akront (British? defunct) made the shoulderd rims back when. San Remo (Spain) did also I think. Also defunct I think.

Just trivia details. Getting away from the main topic, which should he have?

I say it all depends.   :D

I'm going to vote for the Akront style that FunJimmy has....not quite as big of a shoulder - still a very racy look
I don't think it will "look heavy" at all - especially if your using near stock tire sizes.

FunJimmy has all the cool stuff....I hate him. ;)

IMO the XL 250 Motorsport, is the first I remember with shoulderless D.I.D's.. and Excel shouulderless appear to look very similar to them.. There is at least one other of the style, Tagasaki, I think maybe..

I am still leaning smooth for the trim, lean look...
Guess I am trying to stay away from the "Fatbob" look.

I'm hoping to mock up my rear end this weekend. It'll be a wide 17" non-sholdered Excel with tire, swingarm, shocks, fender TL, etc. to get a looksee before I proceed.

reviving this old one... aside from appearance ... is there any handling or performance advantage of shouldered vs smooth... are you limited to a type of tire aspect ratio etc you can use?

Just got my '76 GL100 rims back from the powdercoater, for my '76CB750F1.
