Chemicals for Fuel?
« on: October 20, 2008, 08:21:47 AM »
Hi everyone,

Are there any chemicals I can put in my Gas tank to help clean the Engine/Carbs? I have an 81 cb650, but the engine has not run consistent since early 92. I have had it cranked a few times since March, but not for over 15 mins. Not that the engine is at fault, just been busy. I rebuilt the carbs a month ago. I was thinking of putting something like  Fuel Injection Cleaner, but I dont think I have fuel injection???  Thanks for any help!

I have used b-12 chemtool before in my trucks, but I have read here that it might knock too much bad stuff loose and cause more harm than good, someone else can add to that hopefully

Seafoam, BG44K, among others out there.

I recommend Seafoam myself.
BG44k will loosen all the carbon in your engine if you get enough in your cylinders(gotta flood the motor 'till it stalls out) but as goon 1492 said it can dislodge LARGE chunks of carbon(if you have them).
It can cause scoring of the cylinder walls, but unlikely.(in my opinion)
Most of the time it just blows it out the exhaust.

I use BG44k to clean carbon deposits on heads I have off of the bike before I do a valve job.

My 750 K8 was sitting for many years and I just got it back on the road this year.  Cylinders #1 and #4 were popping like the exhaust valves were sticking. Cycinder #2 was running cold. I run 6 oz. of SEA-FOAM with every tank of gas and the popping stopped and the cold cycinder turned hot.   I've put over 1,000 miles on it since I got it back running and I'm still using SEA-FOAM with every tank of gas and still seeing performance improvements

SEA-FOAM  good stuff.

+1 on the seafoam.  I buy it by the gallon and use it as a fuel additive in my truck, car, motorcycles and yard tools.  I also put a shot of it in the crank case of my car/truck about 100 miles before I change the oil to help clean the oil passages.  I've never tried this trick before changing the oil in a bike... not sure what it would do to a wet clutch.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Try this trick from the past for cleaning combustion chambers...
1. Put tap water into two Windex type spray bottles
2. Remove your bike's air box or pods
3. Warm up the bike
4. Set the idle speed to about 2500 rpm
5. Make sure nothing important is behind your bike
6. Spray water into carbs - as much and as quickly as you can - the engine will stumble but should not stall.
7.. Watch the black crud shoot out your bike's tailpipe.

The same can be done with a can of deep creep. It is basically aerosol seafoam.

Running thru the tank will not. If you spray it in the carbs real quick and kill the engine, let it sit for about 10 minutes and start it back up. That MIGHT make smoke. I did it to a honda rebel and it smoked like nuts. My cb though did not smoke at all. just depends on the carbon build up.

Save a buck and use acetone. Its the active ingredient in seafoam, C2i and the link.

25ml per 15litre should do the trick.

In the tank, no, it will not smoke. At least not enough to be a problem.

Remember, since you are putting it in the tank, results will not be immediate. It will clean as the tank is used.
