If I remember correctly, it is way too much to do with a grinder. We have a template for our boring machines for doing cases.

Thanks! Since that's an issue, maybe you could price the cylinder block work, then supply instructions/template so piston buyers could have the cases done locally to avoid shipping the top case across the country.  Just a thought.

maybe the shipping isn't that big of a deal, i don't know.

If you've got a good quality vertical drill press with an MT2 or MT3 arbor, you can buy an adjustable boring bar to bore your own cases. If you've got a really good quality vertical drill press (pref with auto feed) you could bore your cylinder block too. Like Mike says, use the big bore kit base gasket as the template for boring your cases, or just find the centre of the existing hole.

I'd love to buy one of Jays kits, but the Aussie dollar has taken a 30% dive against the greenback since the start of the US financial meltdown, so unless things pick up, I'll just struggle along with with my old 1060 kit. I'll use some worn out Suzuki GS1000 cylinder liners, cut down and re-bored to 73mm. Cheers, Terry. ;D

The 970cc Block,

Sleeve projection that goes into cases..3.025 dia

Top dia...3.125-3.130

OAL..4.160

Bore ..2.760

No evidence of windowing on front, back, or outside edge. Might have between bore pairs.

Sleeves I got that are marked LA Sleeve,
OD..2.990

OD of Top lip...3.120 x 190 thick

OAL..4.310

As I mentioned these are a bit smaller than the ones on the block above, and will need length & perhaps lip trimmed.. IMO they would be perfect if the OD was 3.025 or bigger.

i'm trying to talk the guy i'm building a high-performance engine for this winter into it, but price is very relative to his decision... i need to know how much sleeves would be and if they will will be close to the right I.D., or if boring will be pretty expensive on top of everything else. it cost me $300 to bore for an 850 kit recently, just because the sleeves were getting so thin and they had to cool off between each pass to prevent warping. it's hard to beat the price of cyclex's 850 kit, but the price of boring knocks it up quite a bit.

The sleeves would be about $300, total machine work $230. So you could send us a block and we would send back a finished 1000cc for approx a grand.

i might be remembering the price wrong, but it was way more than i usually pay and they told me it's because of the cooling time needed to prevent warpage of the sleeves.

230.00 is cheap. I was going to remove the sleeves myself but why bother.

Looks like I'm going to be working some extra days again  :D (especially if I have to buy that friggen Terry a kit for Christmas)

I'm extremely thankful we have someone thats been there done that and in our corner that has almost 40 years experience on these bikes (dammit Jay, we're getting old). That's where the true value lies!! My local machine shop is really a joke. No bike machine shops around except the in-house Harley shop. I know $1000 is a bunch of bucks but I really feel that is a bargain considering what I've been attempting to price out and get done. PLUS it's the complete package and I know it will be done right. If you do it like me you'll do it on the installment plan: head work one year, crank work and rods another year, then pistons, etc yet another year. Isn't there a joke about the old bull not getting in a hurry and just walking down and doing them all  ;D ;)

Ha ha, well you won't have to work that hard Jerry, you only have to buy me the pistons, I've got some old Suzuki GS1000 Sleeves that I can bore out to 72mm (?) on my old Repco boring bar, and I can machine my block and cases on my mill, so all I need is a set of those beautiful APE slugs, and I'll be in the "970 Club", if only perhaps as an associate member!

What was that old Bull about putting off an engine build by continually buying parts, but never actually installing them? C'Mon mate, that building out the back of your house is called a garage, not a performance parts Museum, ha ha! just jokes Santy, put that gun away now! ;D

If you bore them out to 72 mm, you should have 2 mm clearance.  ;D

Yeah, well that's an Aussie "racing clearance" Big Jay! Ha ha, sorry mate, so they're 70mm? Even better, I've got some really good stock GS1000 cylinders (70mm) so that'll save me sweating over the ol' Repco boring bar, ha ha! ;D

So these are 70mm huh....

475 for the pistons?

I'm going to have to look at what can physically fit in a 650's block.
858cc's sounds a lot more interesting than 740cc's.

When are you doing this run of pistons?
Only when enough demand is there, or is it a set date?

Do you know the dimensions of the sleeves you plan on using?
Mainly wondering about the OD of flange and OD of sleeve body.

How much material would need removed from the ID to get to the final piston diameter?

I won't start until there is at least 5 firm. Still working on the sleeves. Terry, GS1000 sleeve flanges are a little thin.

Jay,

I need a sales rep job with you (or a nice discount  ::)). I posted on Satanic Mechanic about this. Any members at the chopper site that can spread the word about the rods and the 1000 kits? It ain't gonna happen without us!

Damn, I hate checking in on this thread. Unemployed at the moment so it may as well be 10 grand. :'(

Good price for "ready to install" kit of this nature, Jay. As soon as I'm employed I'll be in for one. I hope it's really F'ing soon ;) :)

I've read through the posts and sorry if I missed the answer to this, but will the upper case require machining as well and will you offer this if it is?
