Problem bolt on rocker cover
« on: November 06, 2008, 07:50:41 PM »
I'm having a bad day bike wise (82 CB650 Custom) and I apologise for utilising so much of the forum's time but..............
I noticed a small oil leak above the right spark plug and the oil appeared to be coming from one of the small rocker cover bolts .
Logic tells me tighten bolt and no more leak right! Nah.
Small bolt goes round and round and round, so out I take it and the bottom quarter inch (5mil) of the thread is full of alloy!!!??
OK we all know what has happened, PO has been ham fisted and gone past maximum torque.
Question is: how much more thread is there left for me to screw into if I find a longer bolt?
Only someone (obviously not me) who has taken a head off or has a spare one lying around will know.
I really really do not wish to disturb the rocker cover if I don't have to.
Hoping someone can help me with this..........Hush.

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

measure the depth of the hole with a piece of wire and use a bolt that is just short of this length. might work if the bolt you took out is shorter

Good call Scunny, found the hole is quite a bit deeper so following your lateral thinking I removed the exact bolt on the opposite side and guess what?
Bolt that does not leak is about 5 mil longer so I'm thinking that the PO just threw the bolts in when he did the head and did not realise there is a difference.
Now seeing as how the Clymer manual does not cover this problem and has no decent photos to look at, does anyone know which bolts should be longer?
If not I'll have to remove all the rocker cover bolts until I find the long one that should be in the middle!
Now I know how Cinderella's Prince felt! ;D

It really is amazing what PO's do....

I nominated you for the BOTM, as we're focusing on restorations this month.  Your efforts continue to be valliant!  Keep it up and you'll have her as good as the police dept first saw her.
