Fuel problems
« on: October 24, 2008, 07:20:31 AM »
I am new to the forums (long time reader though) and I will make this short and quick. I have rebuilt my carbs and the bike is running much, much better. The problem I have been experiencing has to do with a fuel leak right around the fuel tees. I have searched the forum but not exactly found an answer. The fuel leak stops when the petcock is in the off position. I have replaced the o-ring seals on the fuel tees and braced the fuel line. Yet I still have fuel leaking from around the fuel line to brass fuel tee connector. When I originally replaced my fuel line, the old one was in bad condition, I simply measured the line with a caliper and went to an autoparts store and bought new lines. However the old lines were braided and the new lines are 'fuel injector' non braided rubber lines. I am wondering if the inside diameter of the new lines is too wide and therefore there is higher than needed pressure. Also the new lines slip on real easy - never experienced fuel lines slipping on that easy. Any suggestions? By the way this forum has been a tremendous help.

I'm guessing your comment about "they slipped on real easy" is the issue. The inside diameter sounds too large. It should take some effort to slip them on. You don't mention the bike model, but have you tried 5.5mm line from a dealer? There are some lines available from places like Autozone, but from my experience they get rather hard pretty quickly.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Sorry for not mentioning the model. 74 CB550. I think your comment of 5.5 mm lines sounds about right. The only problem i have run into is that the bike dealers near me have been very little help (I feel like I should ask to walk through their parts shop to get some answers). I guess I was thinking that the fuel line I was using might work if since I braced it with a clamp around the brass insert. Apparently I was wrong. I will try to get my hands in a 5.5 mm fuel line. But I can't go through Bikebandit, which has been a great resource, since they sell fuel lines in 25' to 50'. This being far more than I need.

Thanks for the help.

MotionPro sells it in 3-foot lengths.  Can anyone chime in on which size Davish needs?

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

The 550s use 5.5mm lines.  It equates to about 7/32 for inch sizes.  But, most rubber hose this size is for vacuum lines and NOT fuel proof.

My last buy of 5.5mm fuel line was through the Honda dealer.  I posted the part number a while back in a previous thread on this very topic.  I don't remember it now.

I got grey colored Motion-Pro by the foot at Yamaha Modesto(Ca.). It fits the petcock and T fitting tight with no clamps and has remained flexable for over a year. I like it better than the clear sh!t I got at Modesto Honda/Kawasaki.I bought 3 feet real cheap and pack an 18" chunk with me when I go a long putt.
