My CB350F proj...it's a form of therapy!
« on: October 23, 2008, 05:56:18 pm »
Well, thought I'm far enough in the proj to feel that I have something worth sharing.  When done, the bike will primarily be for my wife to be able to go out for a ride.  It's a '74 with 7k miles that started out as a bit of a mess.  Truth be told, I rode it around the block just enough to say everything worked...brought her home and immediately began stripping it down.  I'm trying to not go wild, just trying to clean the lines up a bit and make it nice.  Clubman's or clip-on's along with rear sets would have completed the look, but I'm not so sure my wife would appreciate the riding position.  It's easier to get her to go along with the project and the upgrades as it's 'hers'!  The tank is a Benelli Mojave.  A bit of welding/fabricating was necessary to get it situated.  Luckily, I ran across a great sprint car builder here in Indy that was able to make short work of it all.  I've picked up the '08 CBR1000RR badges which will look super nice in the tank recess.  Tank will ultimately be an off white color with some form of red stripe.  Fork is from a late model 400F...rebuilt and polished.  Engine was disassembled and new gaskets/seals installed then primed and painted in VHT.  Side covers polished.  New rims/spokes assembled to polished hubs with Avon Roadriders.  Most hardware was yellow cadmium plated locally.

Yet to be accomplished:  rebuild carbs/brake caliper, paint tank/seat, complete wiring, hand controls, chrome:  shifter, rear brake foot pedal and drum lever.  Also, need to find an exhaust!  (not sure where to go for this yet!)

I really was hoping to have done before winter sets in, but it's looking doubtful.  In a way, it's a good thing.  It forces me not to cut corners.  Oh, the gal hiding in the pics is my daughter.  She loves helping me!

That's a sharp looking bike there. I'm really liking the red frame and the Benelli tank.

Did you weld that loop in back?

I have not measured the capacity, but I'd be willing to bet it's much smaller than the Honda tank.  The Benelli volume is really small.

Yes.  The frame was cut at the rear and loop welded in.  Other frame mods were typical...remove center stand brackets etc.  I also welded in mounting plates for tank and seat section.

Yes.  I'm Kyle's brother.

I plan to paint the tank/seat section some version of cream-white with a red stripe.  I'm not set in this scheme...I figure I'll get the rest out of the way then figure it out.

Well done sir. I see a BOTM in the making for sure  ;)

You'll be happy with the VHT on the engine, I used VHT caliper paint and its held up superbly!

I like the polished fork tubes too.

I contacted the previous owner by email the other day to share a slide set of pictures showing him the progress made to his old bike.  He in turn sent me a few pictures of the bike as he found it...  I had no idea this bike had such a dark history.  Check out the state of it in the barn!  Geesh!!

I've managed to get quite a bit of work done.  But, it's still not quite running.  Oh and don't think I'm keeping the tank yellow, I'm not a fan of McDonalds!

Does anyone know what kind of exhaust this is?  I bought it from a guy who switched to MIVV's after having this system on his 350 for VERY few miles.

Anyone who rescues a bike from such a pitiful existence should get a medal.

Great work.

I have the same system on my bike (and am also coincidentally switching to MIVV's soon). I saw a brand new set of these on ebay once and it is my understanding that they were built by MC Engineering.
